Not saying the competition isn't tough. But, for newer sports like snowboarding there are only so many countries that even bother sending funding too.

Figure skating, speed skating, skiing, etc have all been around for decades and therefore many countries put all their funding behind them. Places like China, Netherlands, Norway, Japan put most of their funding into the established events, usually ones they excel at.

I would bet Netherlands puts 95% of its funding into speed skating. But, once the newer events stick around for awhile and stars come from those countries I am sure funding will follow them, and more athletes will come from those countries.

Or someone like Shaun White could come along and propel their sport into the spotlight. Half pipe is probably the most competitive x-game medal event, mostly because of his celebrity.

Bobsledding is huge in Germany, and Austria. Not sure how big it is elsewhere, but I would bet aside from football, bobsledding is the #1 sport in Germany.

What would you all consider to be the biggest events in the winter olympics anyway?

I would say men's hockey, skiing (downhill), speed skating, and figure skating are by far the most watched events.

Men's downhill, hockey finals, men's snowboard half-pipe, figure skating, speed skating would be top 5 viewership I think.

If you guys thought boardercross was fun just wait until skiercross. I think technology has changed a little, but when it first came out it was absolute mayhem. For some reason the guys on skis couldn't negotiate the banks as well as a board (probably because of the sidecut on the boards) and half the time they would fly out of the course. 4 guys poling out of the start area is always pretty interesting too.

Troutman; you can't intentionally take someone out. I mentioned it yesterday, and the announcers touched on it as well. If you're interfered with you have to stop and raise your arms, and that registers a protest, which gets reviewed. They've also included video replay if the judges think something has happened, which DID happen yesterday in the 1/4 final and a rider was DQ'd.

I enjoy this sport for the same reason everyone else does. ANYTHING can happen. It's not judged, and although there are favourites it's just as likely that the #1 ranked rider wins it as the #20. There's not many other sports that can say that.

What I really like about skier cross is you have ex-world cup guys who really know how to ski well. Not to knock the boarders but I think the skiers have a better sense of turn acceleration, working the terrain etc. Will be interesting to see if Rahlves can compete.

I remember growing up my grandma watching Curling and it was full of old people. I hated it then. Now the sport is full of good looking young females. It is worth giving the sport a try as for the babes as much as I hate it.
