The first part of your post makes complete sense... Why would you host the outdoor WINTER events in a place that doesn't get very much snow, during an El Ninio winter...

In Calgary, hot weather was a problem. It was a brown Calgary for the early part of the Olympics, if I remember right, and I distinctly remember images on TV of kids riding their boards on the pathways near Edworthy, underneath the ski jumping events, in t-shirts and shorts.

In did get mighty cold later on.

Wind was also a huge issue - and remains to this day - for ski jumping at Paskapoo. Nakiska also had big wind issues while lots of snow had to be made, both issues that were foreseen ahead of time.

A few decades ago, I had occasion to be in Vancouver in through a January and February for some training and no one in their right mind can claim they didn't know ahead of time that clouds, fog and rain will dominate the forecast through those months . . . . or that it can rain at Whistler at that time of year as well. It's a maritime city. Yet, when the sun is out and the grass is still green in those months, it's a treasure. Hopefully they'll squeeze four or five nice days out of the next two weeks.

Yeah I remember vividly being at C.O.P. in a t-shirt during one of the bobsled events, IIRC it was 15 or 16 C outside.

The best part of that stretch was being down on electric ave and the ladies were able to wear short skirts etc, which made the nights all that much more entertaining.

I would suggest however, that rain is a much bigger problem than warmth for the alpine events, and that is something I couldnt wrap my head around when they announced Whistler as getting those events....having lived in Vancouver for 3 years many moons ago, it was always raining in February by my recollection...always.

Rain outside of the actual day of competition isn't that huge of a deal for alpine events at a place like whistler where there's a great base of snow. These events are essentially taking place on a chute of ice, rain doesn't put much of a damper on that. The big issue is visibility, and the rainy/foggy weather is obviously an issue there.

Postponements in alpine events are par for the course. This isn't a big deal at all.

Not that it would have mattered this year but they should have tried to have them late January for a better chance of snow...I can only remember a few times in my 30 years in Vancouver where there was snowfall in the city after my birthday...which is the 17th. This is a freak year as far as weather goes....

It isnt a big deal unless it rains again tomorrow...and the day after that and again the following day and all the way through. That is my point. In Vancouver in february it would not be at all uncommon for this to occur. It was just a strange decision to use that hill IMO.

Anyways, I certainly hope they get it in and on a fast track because I love the alipne events.

2 weeks of rain at whistler is quite the stretch of the imagination

i'll be very disappointed if these issues really impact the games, we already have a black mark as a host nation with an athlete dying on a brand new luge track
If they were trying to ski in downtown Vancouver you'd have a point, but luckily the have a world class ski resort close by for that. Unless you want to say that Whistler isn't fit to host world class winter events?

This is the warmest winter in Vancouver in recorded history. I can attest to the fact that, in my part of BC, I've never seen a winter with so little snow. To say that they should have accounted for weather never seen before is silly.

Virtually every other winter the conditions on the hills around Vancouver are fine or easily manageable, and even this year there are plans in place that appear to be working -- I haven't heard about any threat to postpone the moguls competition tonight.

LOL there not skiing in Vancouver, luckily there is a place called Whistler with snow. Some people here gotta get off your Vancouver hating glasses, get your head outa your ass and stop being so jelous of them for hosting this event. During the Olympics is a time for the whole country to come together jeez. I'm sure Vancouver will do a great job hosting and there are always minor controversies in the Olympics.

Forecaster on CTV just called for 50-70 mm of rain at the moguls course in Vancouver tonight but it sounds like the competition is still on. They also listed visibility as 'poor'.

Weird, the guy on NBC said that it looked the rain was going to hold off and that as long as the fog doesn't roll in they'll be good through the mens competition.

The athletes interviewed on NBC are saying that the conditions in the moguls events are great. Jonny Moseley (NBC) said athletes love this venue as the snow is very soft.

Hey, just reporting what the weathergirl said on CTV earlier today. Looks and sounds pretty horrible weatherwise right now.

I'm just reporting what the athletes are saying on TV. Seems like that should have more weight than a CTV weathergirl?
