Good for you. No one gives two s***s whether or not you find this appealing. You've come in this thread about 20 times to tell everyone that you don't care. We get it.

We understand you don't enjoy it. Now will you please understand that we don't care that you don't want to see it?

It's worth coming back and posting just to see you getting all twisted

I was actually stoked to see it. I thought it was going to be great as I usually always buy into the hype

Really? Twisted?

I'm just trying to save you some time. It really looks like you are trying to incite the Avatar fans in this thread and so far I don't think any of them have bitten. Give it a rest for a while. If you want to argue with someone try a different thread maybe. Head over to the truck thread and just post that you hate trucks every 20 posts. Or maybe there is a religion thread and you can post how much you hate religion. Maybe even some of the video game threads. Don't contribute, just post how much you hate COD:MW2 every page to see if you can find some people to argue with you.

I think you may be wrong about this.

It is by no means a certainty any which way you slice it - but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see this movie win the Best Picture Oscar. For comparison's sake, Avatar is up for the Best Dramatic Film award at the Golden Globes, against The Hurt Locker, Up In The Air, Precious, and Inglourious Basterds. Personally, I thought Basterds and Up In The Air were better overall movies, but when you factor in political reasons such as Avatar's ability to put butts in seats and the campaign Fox will likely launch to get it some awards, I would give it a good shot at taking the big award (bear in mind the Oscars is upping their Best Picture shortlist to 10 for some reason this year, but I doubt that will have any real effect).

Will be interesting to watch how it unfolds over the next few weeks.

I'd be surprised to see this win, but you might be right about the political reasons. Has there ever been a big budget Sci-Fi movie that won an Oscar? Do you think they'll overlook the "weak story" and give it the award just because of what they've accomplished with the CGI?

I think it would be more due to Avatar being what I think is the kind of product the AMPAS want to promote and foster, as far as being an event movie that brings people out to the cinema to see it. More than one of the reviews I read of the film have alluded to this notion; this isn't a movie that pirates easily, and really almost gives the viewer no other option than to see it at the theatre - who wants to watch a blurry, camcorded transfer that won't remotely convey the film in its proper exhibition? So much has been said about how this movie revolutionizes the industry, and I think it winning major awards would be more in recognition of that than the story or the performances... or even the special effects (no doubt it will clean up in the technical categories, though).

Who knows, though... just a hunch I have at this point.

Ummm, I'm pretty sure that's exactly the point. There aren't many people praising the amazing plot and character development. It's the revolutionary mind blowing 3D epicness and avatities that Avatar has going for it.

the third Lord of the Rings movie did. personally i don't think Avatar will, the Oscars have been pretty good about not turning into the Grammys and just giving the most popular movies the awards. it might get a nomination at best, but one of the more true dramatic movies of the year will take Best Picture. it should, and probably will take all the technical achievement Oscars it can get however

I still think RotK winning was kind of for the whole trilogy. But I'm not complaining.

BOX OFFICE UPDATE

James Cameron has done it again.

Avatar grossed $25 million on New Year's Day, setting it up perfectly to destroy the best-ever 3rd weekend record currently held by Spider-Man ($45 million). Early estimates suggest Avatar will earn ~$61 million this weekend.

If estimates are accurate, Avatar will end the weekend with over $340 million domestic and well over $800 million worldwide. Only 4 movies have ever broken the $1 billion worldwide mark, the most recent being The Dark Knight.

It looks as though, when the dust settles, Cameron will sit with not only the #1 movie at the box office ever, but probably #2 as well.

This is the top 5 as it stands today:

All-Time Worldwide Gross

1. Titanic ($1842.9 million)
2. LOTR: ROTK ($1119.1 million)
3. POTC: DMC ($1066.2 million)
4. The Dark Knight ($1001.9 million)
5. Harry Potter 1 ($974.7 million)

Damn is this movie over-rated. It is decent, but District 9 is way better.

I still like the movie but damn.

I respectfully disagree.

I liked District 9 but I found it a little unsatisfying.

You think Avatar is over-rated. I think District 9 is over-rated.

Each person has their own opinion about each movie... the truth is that people as a whole like Avatar more than District 9.

I just saw this movie, and knew nothing about it at all. I had no clue what I was seeing and had no clue with was 3D.

What a great movie! That was a lot of fun. Those that said they hated it have something wrong with them. The movie was pure eye candy, brought us to another planet and pulled us through an adventure that was often exhilarating. I tried to wipe a bug from my face that was in the movie! Cool stuff.

I also had not been to the movies since 2008.

The only thing missing from the film was full-on Avatar shaggin'. I wanted to see a little blu-dity.

It's inevitable at this point that Avatar will rank at least #2. I also hope that it beats titanic for 2 reasons:

1) It will encourage movie makers to take things to the next step. What Avatar did was create a whole new experience for the audience; and

2) It is humanities great shame that a movie as craptacular as Titanic is the highest grossing film of all time.

I wouldn't go that far. In my opinion, how much a movie makes doesn't equate to people liking more than another movie. Titanic was terrible in the eyes of A LOT of people, but it made a ton of money. Spiderman 3 sucked, but it made a TON of money. Everyone apparently hated Transformers 2 (I didn't), but it still made a TON of money.

Avatar was a good movie, I won't deny I enjoyed it, but it was too long, and Act 2 was BORING BORING BORING.

District 9 is a hard movie to compare it too because you either think it is brilliant (me), or you think it sucks (probably because people don't understand the concept), not to mention it isn't an action movie, which Avatar is.

Just read a few posts above me about the Grammys. IMO, Inglorious Basterds should win over this.

I thought District 9 was way overrated. I understood the concept, and yes it was trying to send a poltical message. But over all I didn't think it was anything special. I'm not a fan of the joggy camera work that they used in the movie, similary to the Bourne movies, Saving Private Ryan. It totally ruins the movie experience for me.

I absolutely loved Avatar. Yes, the story was cliched. In fact, it felt like numerous Japanese anime flicks I've seen, or even a type of Disney movie. It was predictable and overdone IMO. But I knew that going into the movie, and I must admit, the visuals totally compensated for the somewhat weak storyline.

So yah, you can count me as one of the people who liked Avatar way more than District 9.

I don't get the Visuals in Avatar either. Yeah they were fantastic, but was the 3D that amazing? Apart from the opening scene where everyone wakes up in their pods in the water, which was awesome in 3D, I don't feel the 3D was that magnificent. I think 2D would look just as good (minus the opening thing I mentioned which was awesome), as the 3D did. Maybe because I was sitting in the front row, but it should matter. I don't want the 3D to be gimmicky like "Pop out at me", which it wasn't, but I didn't get the hype for the 3D effects. They were 'meh' to me.
