Last time in Calgary I took a group of friends to Globefish and was very surprised (almost embarrassed) how poor it was. I love Japanese food and especially Izakaya's and had been told it was good. Globefish is not an Izakaya at all and a very poor imitation of Japanese. Obviously hard to match Tokyo but Globefish was plain bad. At least some Japanese chefs & staff usually equals good Japanese food.
Misato was much better.
Hapa in Vancouver is very good for nouveau Izakaya style.

Personally, I always preferred the food at Towa over Globefish - Towa is the best I've had in Calgary. That said, I'm no authority on what is authentic or not.

For a cheap lunch, Dakota Deli on 9th St. has huge wicked donairs. Completely unauthentic, not a rotating meat spindle in sight. And yet, so good.

Doesn't have to be authentic but it should be a reasonable version & taste good.

Not really a restaurant per say as it is take-out only. But there is a little East Indian place in Dalbrent Plaza called 'Saffron'. The prices are about 30% better than most east indian places and the food is superior. Best butter chicken I have ever tasted.

For the not so classy. I love La Chien Chaud on 4th street. The Ukranian dog is incredible. Who can not honestly not like a hotdog heaped with perogie filling, sour cream bacon bits and cheese?

Matador Pizza in Varsity has great pizza, but what really keeps me coming is the dressing on their house salad. One time I even gave the waitress 10 bucks to fill up a styrofoam container of the stuff and I ate it all. With a spoon.

Saffron's good, eh? Crap, I have a $50 gift certificate for there that I never used and now I moved away from the NW. I'll have to figure out a way to use it I guess.

Disagree. It's decent for a chain, but it's not up there with any of the better steakhouses. I'd put it on par with Earl's, Moxie's, Milestone's, etc.

For dinner - Vintage
For patio - Joey Tomatoes in Eau Claire
For taking my 3 year old - Montana's - he can draw on the table, and no one cares

I will have to check out Dakota Deli. I have been looking with no avail to a descent donair place in Calgary.

I am looking for more good, less authentic. This sounds like my kind of place.

I don't see any reason why you would need to descend to find a decent donair place. Most of them are located above ground.

A&A's on 1st St SE and 6th Ave is good.

I am looking for something better than that. I tried it and was unimpressed. I am used to a standard from a place in Edmonton and refuse to settle. I have even travelled to the far NE (the Millwoods of Calgary) to try and find a good one to no avail.

Yeah, Rose is awesome. I grab lunch there at least once a week, and one day I forgotmy wallet when I had an order for 5 guys. She just said "Don't worry, pay me next time." You don''t see that kind of trust often anymore.

It is kinda funny to see a bunch of burly mechanics chowing down on samosas, butter chicken and beef vindaloo, but half our dealership is hooked on her food.

Another impressive thing is she has no violations on that government restaurant website. Almost every place I order out from has at least one or two.

The subs at the vietnamese place next door are pretty frikkin awesome too.

Can anyone recommend a nice place in Kensington area? Looking to spend some money but don't really want to get all that dressed up. Jeans, dress shirt, dress shoes would be great.

If you are willing to go Ethnic, The Sultan's Tent is fantastic. Also Globefish is really great if you are into sushi. Muse is pretty good if you are just looking for some standard fare.

Whatever you do, don't go to Julio's Barrio.

Kensington Wine Bar and Vero Bistro - I recommend both highly. Pulcinella is a high-end pizza joint.

I was interested in Vero Bistro for sure but wasn't sure about the dress code policy. Jeans are okay there?
