Firstly, if you're under 25, there's a good chance you'll be hit with some additional costs. There might be some ways to get out of it (i.e. if your insurance covers rental cars), but the one time we did it (this was a long time ago), it cost us quite a bit. Here is some more info:

EDIT: It looks like those U-25 fees are mandatory -- even having your own insurance won't waive it...
You used to be able to get some great deals on Budget and Enterprise (i.e. on weekends), but now that we're in high travel season, those deals are gone. For late August/early September, you might be able to get a good deal -- I would keep checking because if you book directly with the company, you can cancel and rebook (i.e. at the lower rate) without any cost as long as its before 24 (48?) hours of the booking.

I've used Hotwire to book a US rental car, but the prices in Canada didn't seem any better than the usual rates...
