When my wife, who is a bit of a metalhead, found that song within the first month of dating her, on a mix CD I had in my car, she was horrified to learn I liked that kind of stuff. Still, there's something so catchy about it - and ridiculous.

Dead serious. Maybe it just wasn't your generation but I think the age group of most of us people are people who grew up in the 80s and have great childhood or teenage memories of all the music, the fashions, the fads, the icons, the movies, etc. We're also a generation raised on TV so we all have vivid memories of seeing it all even if some of us were to young to really be the teenagers of that era.

I'd have to say, 70% of my music collection is from the 80s. I've started collecting vinyl again from the 80s as well. I'm still in my 20s. Back in highschool people were always giving me grief for loving the 80s so much (I hated the popular music, fashions of the 90s) but I stick to it as I always have.

That song and Mr Roboto had a nice little resurgance due to Jeffster from Chuck

Funnily enough, another artist stepped up and hip hopified Africa recently

They would, but they would assume you are referring to the Goldfinger version.

I was in HS from 82-87, so that music brings back a lot of memories. Then when I got to university suddenly there were people who played stuff that I had never heard before. London, Ont radio was pretty pop oriented and and I thought OMD ("Secret") was edgy. Then I encounter things like The Smiths, Jesus and Mary Chain, Sinead O'Conner (before - Nothing Compares 2 U) and so on.

But I still have mixed CDs in my truck with Alice Cooper, Dexys Midnight Runners, Naked Eyes, Flock of Seagulls, John Parr, Go-Gos, Duran Duran, etc

Ya, see, I'm not going in to the office dressed 80s, I'm going to a theme party. Different, but I can see how you got "work" confused with "party".

On another note, I decided to go Miami Vice for this. I couldn't find a white blazer but I found an awesome white vest, white pants, and a neon blue shirt. I just need a mullet.

Don't forget to leave the socks at home. You need the 2 day beard and lots of gell in your hair. Make sure you leave the shirt unbuttoned half way down, and it never hurts to find a shark tooth pendant.

Go for a run an hour before the party so you have that slightly oily look.

Miami vice is so always the default 80s getup for when you can't think of anything or are on a budget. You just take any random suit and roll up the sleeves. Wear loafers and forget the socks. Forget the belt, get suspenders...and wear a cotton t-shirt. Make sure your hair is slicked back and have some Raybans or Wayfarers.

Contrary to what people typically think of the Miami Vice look or the 80s, neon was never part of the Miami Vice repetoire. The colors are pastel man! Pastel!

P.S. Don't forget to arrive in your Ferrari Daytona.

ARRRGH just thinking about this all makes me want to goto an 80s party, I haven't been to one in 2 years!

In fairness, there is no "neon" blue really... it's hard to describe.

This color. This color with white pants and a vest. perfect mang.

I am of the Woodstock/rock & roll/hippy free love generation. Now those decades (60's & 70's) were cool.

Or the canvas belts those were big. Don't forget about the leather ties or better yet the skinny ties.

In the 70s people longed form the 50s. In the 80s it was the 60s. In the 90s it was the 70s..... well, you get the idea.

This thread just reminds me that I want to watch "The Wedding Singer" again.

1st - to all you '80s video posters. Thankyou for not posting that horrible Flames red hot vid.
2nd - A CPs '80s themed party would be fun. Not from Calgary so if one is organized gimme a couple weeks notice.

3rd - Def Leppard, Cindi Lauper, Cars, Wham, and all the others that used to be on the 7/11 slurpee cups.
