As much as I like the Robocop idea, it is alot easier to get your acquisition licence and buy a shotgun.
A round in the air would pretty much scare anyone.

Or as we like to call it, a round in the air is a wasted round.

But early on when I was in the army, I learned that you carried your own ammunition and it was heavy, so you really didn't want to waste it. Plus that stuff costs money.
I'm all for the warning shot below the head.

Yep... my brother-in-law is from Texas too. He has the same motto too... but that tends to work better as he's in Iraq working for one of those private security firms (been in Iraq for the last 3 years). Shoot first, ask questions later. I guess it works since he's still alive.

I read somewhere Texas has some of the lowest break and enter/theft crime rates because of their gun carry laws.........I think it is a good model to follow. As they say, if you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.
Some guy in Lethbridge this week caught someone trying to steal his car so he broke the suspects legs and one arm with a bat......and guess who got in trouble with the cops?
You are correct if you guessed the guy protecting his property!
What kind of ass-backwards laws do we have here anyway??
Home weapon list:
Laser - get a powerful one, off Ebay or something. The beam should light up the room, but also blind the intruder, potentially forever. Something in the 100 dollar range should do, usually a blue beam.
Tiger Balm - Cover your hands and wait in the dark for an eye gouge. They will scream in pain.
Spray Paint - Forget pepper spray, paint their face purple. This is very painful, tough to get out, and you can tell the cops to look for the guy running around blindly with a purple face.
Fish bat - A full size baseball bat is too large. You should get the smaller version meant for killing fish. Practice swinging for when you need it.
Surefire Flashlight - these are powerful, simply shine in the 'perp's eyes.
The reality is, you take away someone's vision and they are done, especially if you have something that you can hit them with. My laser cannot be looked at, and it fits in my hand. A ballistic surefire flashlight can be used to strike with. The combo of both of them is deadly.
Guns are also the perfect weapon. If you have one, make sure you need to use it. Make sure you know how to use it.
I don't care for a second what happens to someone that breaks into my place or I need to defend myself or someone else. Quite simply, I will choke them out until they stop moving. Then I will paint their face purple.

The Googles tell me that there were 605 murders in Canada in 2005 and 1407 in Texas the same year. There are about nine million more people in Canada than there are in Texas.
That is not a good model to follow.

I can't find this story in the Lethbridge Herald. Do you have a link?
If it is true, I can't blame him for protecting his property, but his property was no longer threatened after the first swing of the bat. If he really did break both the guy's legs and one of his arms, at some point in this confrontation the car thief was lying on the ground and the other guy was taking batting practice.
shockingly I agree with Rouge on both points. Guns in the home don't necessarily make a great community deterrent, chances are it just brings the chances up that a criminal is going to bring a weapon of his own during a break in. There's also a chance of an untrained person with a gun hurting himself or unintentionally hurting a family member during a chaotic situation or worse yet putting a gun in the hands of a criminal. Don't misunderstand this as support for gun control or for the gun registry in its current form. If your going to have a gun in your house you have to lock it away, keep it unloaded and put a trigger lock on it, which means in terms of home defense its almost useless.
On the second part, you are allowed to use reasonable force to protect your home, yourself or your family member, but there has to be a strong line between reasonable or excessive force.
If I shoot a guy in the leg during a break in thats ok, but if I walk up to him, reload and then give him 4 in the skull, then I've become a cold blooded murderer. Its just like the fool that chased down the people that broke into his farm and shot one of them off of his property. He was no longer in a position of defending himself, he was acting like a vigilante and he used excessive force stupidly. People need to understand that your best defense is getting your family out of the house and contacting the police. You can always replace possessions, but you can't replace family members.
So in short form, the best way to secure your house is a good security system, and motion sensitve cameras in key rooms.

Like Neverland Ranch?
EDIT: wait, that was to keep people in, wasn't it...
EDIT 2: Allegedly

Anyone know where I can pick up a night stick (short of robbing a cop)? I think I need to upgrade from the hammer I keep on the shelf in my front closet. Afterall, if Sarah Conner can operate one, I think I can too.

Screw that you want the ASP tactical baton, they're easy to carry, quick to deploy and they have a really nice balance
