Michael Bay can learn a true lesson on Action, Effects and STORY.

This movie was outstanding! I laughed so hard at Simon Pegg. What a funny guy. Great casting, and all around wonderful action story.

I never watched the original series and maybe one of the movies. But because of various graveyard jobs and continuity syndication, I have watched every episode of TNG, DS9 and Voyager as well as all the TNG movies. But I didn't watch any episodes of Enterprise.

So for me, this was another time travel plot that had the look of Nemesis with lesser known characters.

Too bad, TOS is >>>>>>>>>>>>>> than any of those new series. DS9 had it's moments.

Yup. Still had pretty good numbers this weekend. A second weekend of $43 million is quite respectable. It will only finish the weekend an estimated $5 million behind Angels and Demons which is just opening.

Since some spoilers have started popping up through this thread, I was wondering...

Why exactly did the Vulcans allow Nero to drill a hole through their planet? It didn't seem like they were leading much of a resistance.

Spoilers

There's a part in the movie where they talked about how far the federation fleet was away and would not reach vulcan in time, so i assume since vulcan is a part of the federation, their fleet was far away as well. Spock also mentions that there are no less than 10,000 of his people left, so since it's safe to assume not that many can escape the planet being eaten up so quickly by the singularity, most of the survivors are on the fleet.

****SPOILERS****

A big part of this is the time difference too. Nero's ship, despite being a mining ship, had 130 years of technological advancements over any ship it would face other than Spock's little ship.

That's how the Narada defeated the fleet of 47 Klingon ships as well.

What planetary defenses the Vulcans had would have been wiped out immediately and the Vulcans do not really have many ships of their own. They contribute to Starfleet... and since the main fleet was too far away to be of much help they asked Starfleet HQ on Earth for help... They sent 7 or 8 ships including the Enterprise and all but the Enterprise were immediately destroyed.

The Vulcans, unfortunately, were mostly powerless to stop what was happening. They did all they could, and that was ask for help.

			****spoilers

Vulcan = France early WWII. Vulcan has never been seen to have much of a defensive fleet or powerful space force despite their high level of technology. Maybe they had some kind of Maginot Line that was easily swept aside by the 100 years more advanced Narada technology (who afterall, easily wiped out 47 Klingon battle cruisers - if they can do that, Vulcan ships would have been hopeless). That breaks down a bit when you consider that he still needed Starfleet's defense codes to get anywhere near earth - even if the entire fleet was in the Laurentian system. Maybe earth just has much better planetary defenses than the hapless Vulcan.

Got blitz'd.

The only problem I have with the Narada is how a 24th century Romulan Mining ship manages to still be that powerful. Maybe it's some kind of collossal planet cracking type ship who's mining tools and explosives (they were wierd looking drilly looking slow moving torpedos afterall) are still more powerful than anything that small 23rd century ships can muster. If the thing is designed to blow up asteroids or crack planets, starships would have little chance.

The biggest cut scene of the film shows that the Narada was crippled after the Kelvin crashed into it and a Klingon fleet arrived, captured the crew, and sent them to a prison planet for 25 years (Rura Penthe) which is where Nero was actually hanging out before breaking out again and reclaiming his ship. That seems like a majorly bugged plot point though (maybe why it was filmed but then cut)...If the Klingons captured the Narada for 25 years, they would have access to it's ridiculous technology and the Jellyfish (Vulcan science ship).

In the prequel comic Countdown the Narada is bonded with Borg tech before going back in time. Is that kind of lame? Yes, but it explains it a bit more.

But it wasn't time travel, it was inter diemensional travel. I understand this concept as a DC comics reader with the whole "multiverse" concept. Hundreds and thousands of parrellel universes, all following their own time line and series of events. Some have great similarities, others do not, some are in the age of Rome, some are in the future..

Nero came into this Universe, not back in time in his Universe, but a new one. Not sure if he knew this himself or not, but it is similar to Superboy Prime in DC, he goes from Universe to Universe seeking revenge for his destroyed home planet.

I thought it was a very cool concept, I am not a huge ST fan, I have watched very limited shows... but this movie BLEW me away. This is the best movie I have seen in years. It wasn't the best done movie, but it was the one that has me saying WOW, and still thinking about it. I haven't seen a movie like this since Batman Returns. Maybe the fact I know just enough about Star Trek to get the numerous inside jokes, but not enough to care about anything they might have messed up makes it seem so good to me.

I think the reason they brough in Old Spock is because they wanted to have a link to the old shows.. and it helped to develope the relationship between Kirk and Spock, and perhaps make up for lost time. In the TV series were they friends during their training or...?

Edit: I also wanted to add that I thought Spock was amazing.. I don't know a lot about spock, but as an outsider I would think he is exactly how he was played in the movie. I was very impressed. As for Pine.. I thought he was a bit of a punk going in and I was against him playing Green Lantern, but if he can play Hal Jordan half as good as he played Kirk.. I am all for it. Ultimately, they have very similar personalities.
