Good thing I was a kid, or else I wouldn't of had the time or patience to get by the part.

I haven't played that game in more than 20 years but I just now searched it and found that video. Hearing Lando Calrissian and his stupid comment about the power generator made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Goddamn I hated that game. I could never get through it. Does anyone remember what the third level was? I only got there once or twice.

What really pissed me off was minus world in Mario 1. It took me forever to find out how to get there, and when I did I had no clue what to do. The rumors around the school yard were that if you finished it enough times you got wings. Other people said if you took a certain path you'd finish it. I tried about a million times before I gave up. Once the internet was in full swing I looked it up and found out there was absolutely no point to minus world.

Oh man I forgot about Sinistar. That was a game the older boys played.

I didn't find roger rabit that bad. I wrapped it on the second rental.

I spent over a year playing Pitfall II for the Atari 2600 trying to get a perfect score. I would get so close but our controllers were wonky and if you didn't get on a ladder right you fell and lost 50 points. Finally after thousands of hours I made it and never played it again.

I believe the third level was the ewoks taking on the walkers. At least I know that was one of the levels. You had to time everything just right to get the ropes across between 2 trees and knock out the posts holding the tree trunks back from rolling downhill so the walkers would trip.

Strider for the genesis was a pile of crap. It was based on the arcade version but seemed slow and glitchy when they released it on the genesis. There was a part where you had to wall jump up this elevator shaft or something and timing it was extremely hard because of the jumps in the speed of the game. I loved that game in the arcade but hated the port.

Mega man was a favorite of mine growing up but in the last year I picked up that mega man classic pack with all 8 games in it and realized that I had too much time on my hands as a kid. That first mega man is hard as hell and no saves.

Super smash TV was another annoying fun/hard game. Took a crap load of team work, but could be crazy fustrating at time.

Good thing I was a kid and lacked the physical strength to pick up my tv and throw it against a wall.

Huh. Doesn't ring a bell. Because I sucked at it.

There was another infuriating Star Wars game, but it was for the Atari. You were flying around the snowwalkers in the little ship Luke flew in that scene and you had to shoot the "sweet spot" on the snow-walkers. I don't think there was anything else to it, and it was impossible.

Vaguely related video-game question: Would anyone be better at Track and Field now than you were then? I don't know if I could get through that hundred meter dash without keeling over now.

What an awesome game that was.

The rumours we had was that you had to jump over the flagpole to get a sword.... let's just say I really wanted that sword.

So many Commodore 64 games were weird and hard.

Ad Infinitum. There was another top view dungeon crawler that seemed to go on indefinitely and you could wander in a variety of directions. There was another text based wandering around game that was quite hard.

/agree on Kid Icarus. Was frustrated by that a bunch in elementary.

Anyone remember the Amiga game where you were a guy on an alien planet, side scroller, and it had really unique graphics.. it was really different and very cool, but I can't remember the name. Arg.

Anyone remember the Hugo trilogy for PC? Hugo's House of Horrors (1990) [later re-released as Hugo's Horrific Adventure] was classic. The subsequent sequels to round out the Hugo Trilogy were pretty decent (and increasingly difficult!!) as well. Hugo II: Whodunit? (1991) [later re-released as Hugo's Mystery Adventure]; & Hugo III: Jungle of Doom! (1992) [later re-released as Hugo's Amazon Adevnture].

I thought these games were nuts when I was in Grade 5. Typing in every imaginable word or phrase in order to progress to the next area was torturous pleasure. The storyline seemed strangely compelling, while also challenging. Hours and hours of fun!

Maybe the craziest part is that the developer, Gray Design Associates, ported the game from Windows to DOS very early on, and has continued to update/tweak new releases for compatibility to newer OSes ever since. On their official site, the entire trilogy (incl. the DOS and Windows versions, and indispensible hint/answer book in PDF format) is available for $10 direct from the developer as an instant download. It even works w/ Vista (maybe even 7!). Not sure about 64-bit platforms.

Alternatively, you can download any one of them for free as shareware here, or just play online (I and II only) to experience Hugo without the download.

Here are a few screens of the first installment of Hugo. A short review of it is here.
