I will no longer be parking at the park n ride stations when I go to a Flames game until the nights are free as they should be.

Similarly, I just moved last year after 8 years in Calgary. Paying for parking to use the crappiest train system in Canada. Awesome. Maybe the braintrust will use the money to build more street-level railway crossings in the downtown core.

Empty spaces dot Calgary LRT lot after fee imposed
Quote:
Side streets appeared to be filling up faster than the Somerset-Bridlewood transit parking lot this morning as commuters tried to dodge the $3 parking fee which came in today and three park-and-ride stations.
By 9 a.m. there were still plenty of spaces at the southernmost transit lot. Normally south-enders and out-of-towners fill it up by 7 a.m., regular lot users said.
“I haven’t even seen it this dead on weekends,” said Silverado resident Nicole, as her husband paid at the automated machine at a half-empty Somerset lot around 7:10 a.m

And accordingly, lots further up the line at Fish Creek-Lacombe, Shawnessy and Canyon Meadows filled up earlier, with some drivers parking illegally on the grass, in supermarket lots or along any available patch of curb.

Yup, many times. Their routes (or lack thereof) suck, but even Deadmonton figured out that it's better to put a train underground through the downtown core.
Maybe I've just spent too much of my life on 5th and 6th Aves in rush hour sitting there watching the train go by. Is that light on 5th (Bow Trail) where you enter downtown still a ridiculous sequence if you get there at the wrong time?

Why should daytime parkers subsidize the night time and weekend parkers for essentially using the same service? If this is truly to upkeep the costs of said land, then everyone should have to chip in that is using this service - no?

Because there isn't demand for the spots at night/weekend.
Why should people who use the bus or walk to the transit subsidize those who drive?
Don't want to pay for parking, live closer to where you work.

I think you got it backwards. Why should people who drive have to subsidize people who take the bus. As was stated earlier, it is much more expensive to fuel and maintain all busses then to maintain a parking lot.

Ding Ding Ding - we have a winner. The demand is lower evening and weekends - sure, but they are using the same service others have to pay for.

Because all those cars driving pollutes, and we don't want that.

City council have approved ditching the fee on evenings and weekends -- one day after the fee is implemented. Really just goes to show how well this whole thing has been thought out -- the optics are terrible.
EDIT: See below -- I'm not sure if it is official or not -- the article I cited below seems to say it is, but I'm not sure if that's entirely accurate...

I have to say that I am really glad that they instituted pay parking at the end of the lines.
I used to have to drive all the way to Brentwood because Dalhousie was right full way too early for me to get a spot there, so now instead of driving another 5-10 minutes (depending on traffic of course), and having to stand on the train because it is already full when it gets to Brentwood, I get to pay $3, park closer to my house, and I can sit down on my way to work.
That's a great deal! Thanks Calgary Transit!

You sure on that? Do you have a source?

Hours after a new $3 fee at transit park-and-ride lots took effect Monday, city council was already backtracking on that decision, voting to remove the charge during evenings and weekends.

During the weekdays demand far exceeds supply. Also, it's still cheaper to park and ride then park downtown in most cases.
During the weekends and evenings, the parking lots in most cases are half empty. Also, parking downtown is only $2 so it's technically cheaper to drive and park downtown not factoring in gas etc.
Is it fair? Not sure about that but it's smart on the city as supply and demand will justify it. It's just like how downtown can charge up to $40 per day during the weekdays but only $2 for the same spots in the evenings and weekends.

Vote is on Apr 6 and if passed will probably take a few weeks minimum to implement.
The Flames better make it to the 2nd or 3rd rounds!!!!

I don't use the park and ride system except for the occasional sporting event.
Are these lots ticketed via the car with the cameras on it?
If they are and you park with you plate coverd (ie back into a stall as we don't require a front plate) , I don't see how you could get a ticket unless it is manually written up?

Which I am sure will happen, and since you made the metermaid get out of their car I am sure you get one of those special $50 parking tickets or something like that.

It's hard to explain, but the way it is happening, it doesn't look like a petition. The way the parking is, doesn't really affect the neighborhood. It looks more like some guy behind a city planning desk is arbitrarily zoning off more and more parking area until there is none left.
