Man what's with the penalty parade everyone is having? My penalties have actually gone down with the new patch in both eashl and vs mode.
For the pokecheck: Only do it when you're skating backwards and the guy is trying to come into your zone. Never poke check from behind...the puck isn't at his feet! I use this to intercept passes to the point also.
For checking: Only check people with the puck or people directly in front of the goalie. Never check from behind. To prevent cross checking calls try coming from the side for a hip check. If you're racing for a puck against someone watch out for them to peel away at the last second, if they don't touch the puck you'll get called if you go for the hit. Instead of checking sometimes you can just skate into the guy and he'll lose the puck. You can also draw penalties this way. Also watch out for the checking "lock on".
For stick lift: Only do this when you're side by side with the guy you're trying to stick lift. I see so many people try to stick lift when they're trailing a guy from behind resulting in a penalty. I also use this on D when the player isn't close enough to the goalie to safely check. I just make sure I'm standing right beside him and stick lift when the pass comes to him. Also if you miss watch out if you try for another stick lift, the chances of a penalty go up with each miss.
Basically if the guy with the puck has his back to you, don't do anything unless you have a high enough speed to catch up to him. Otherwise try to cut down the angle or let the D take care of him and try to go in his passing lanes.
Also hold L2 when looking for rebounds!

this patch sucks!
the cheap goals in the old version were stoppable....guess there were too many whiners.
I do like that they added stick lift into the classic controls though..

I am in full agreement with Human Torch. My PIMs/game have stayed the same with the patch, while scoring options have become a lot more interesting. A big thumbs up from me.

Thats the key thing for me...defense was effective in the old version. I felt like, even the so called cheap goals, I felt had an opportunity to stop. Maybe not as realistic but it worked well for video game hockey.
I will try Human Torches techniques and see if I can adjust my game though.

i love the patch. sure i am an idiot and still take penalties, but i deserve them. as far as the eashl is concerned, the change in penalties was totally necessary. teams would interfere constantly. i know this isnt a big deal in single player games because you are always controlling the guy with the puck. but i cant count the number of times i was just skating down the ice behind the play only to end up on my butt with no call. this has to be done. all you have to do is play smart hockey. human torch gives soem great advice. complaining about this would be like saying in madden you shouldnt have to spin, juke, stiff arm or anything else; that you should just be able to run everyone over. this patch just ups the level of intelligence you have to use when playing.

It's not really "my techniques". It's the way it is in real hockey. Basically this patch made the game less "arcadey" and more sim like.

For the fatas, taking penalties doesn't even matter. We score more shg than goals against on the pk!

I like how its less "arcadey" and more simulation like. They even made that 3 on 3 game for those who wants to play "arcadey" type of hockey (Or they could always go with the 2k series)

No, I try not doing anything (no stick checking (A) or poke checking (Bumper)), for like 10 minutes. And they skate around me, I do it once, and he trips/gets slashed/high sticked. Couldn't believe it. Even the hits, they are finally calling real interference penalties (I try and get away with them all the time), so that is fine, but when I try and do a clean hit, I elbow the guy the guy.
I am complaining about Ranked 1on1 matches. I am glad they added all the penalties to the EASHL, the amount of interference in that is astonishing (with no calls).

^^^^ It was actually a joke, you said something about the other guys you were playing getting no calls, while you got called for everything.

i think in the 4 or 5 OTP games I played I potted 9 or 10 goals! Took 4 penalties first game and that probably my average. I seem to get hit from behind because it is so damn tempting. A couple gay (not that there's anything wrong with that) cross checks. But overall great work by ea. Played vs a team where it was just a parade by the same two people, they just didnt learn you couldn't hit away from puck we scored 4 PPGs!! Hope to play with the club soon

jobo, you really gotta talk to them about lowering chelios rating! that ruins me wanting to start a franchise mode every time! how chelios is rated better than rafalski, i will never know! i shouldn't have to edit such an embarrassing mistake every time they update rosters!

EA has been great with roster moves this year, I suspect pretty quick for the new roster update.

I am loving the patch myself.
In online ranked versus, I am now dominating (6 game win streak now), whereas pre-patch I was getting whupped by guys who would exploit cheeser goals repeatedly.
I like the fact that the ways people score are more varied now.
