The Twitter site really managed to hide this information, I don't know why it's not front and center.

"Twitter" and "tweets" are too stupid to say; I'd rather eat a bag of pus-filled hobo ears than admit to "tweeting" anyone, which sounds like I greased them up and committed unnatural acts upon their dead but still quivering carcass.

i happen to like it all, in fact the one i use the least is the phone.
you forgot Skype, which is easily the most useful and productive.

Really? So the way of the future is sitting in front of a screen and updating our lives for people that largely don't care? We'll become a socially awkward society if we interact primarily through all these artificial mediums. How is Skype more productive than any of the other IM clients? Is it fancier? More options?
I think I'll be just fine getting on without signing up for 12 different online accounts.

I've told my actual friends not to post pictures of me on that site. It's flat out weird that we all sit at our computers and literately slave over this personal webspace. Such an enormous waste of time. Use a telephone and go for a walk.
Consider this:
Number of ways the average person can stay in touch:
- Telephone (in some cases 2 or even 3 lines)
- Text messaging on or more devices
- Email, multiple accounts
- Facebook, Twitter, etc.
- MSN, AIM, ICQ, etc.
We're EASILY talking 7-10 ways for someone to get a hold of you, and on the flip side, 7-10 devices/accounts we're supposed to be responsible for checking. It's too damn much and I'm sick of it.
/End rant. Thanks for the thread.

EXACTLY! Instead of working on your virtual life, why don't you go out and actually live it. Instead of poking your friends, why don't you call them or visit them. Instead of gifting someone a useless bunch of pixels why don't you send them a card or take them out to eat, or come up with something actually meaningful.
I mean there are some people and groups that actually use it as a tool, but way too many others live on there.
Oh, and posting pictures of the same nightclub you go every week with the same group of people. Exciting. Sign me up to go through your albums please.
Your photos from your vacation to Regina?! Four folders? May I?!
242 pictures of you in different clothes trying to look like you are ignoring the camera even though you set up the picture. INTERESTING!!!
Die Facebook... DIE!!!

I use Skype to talk to and see my kids when I am travelling. Its a free service that replaces the telephone.
And yes, the way of the future does include these kinds of communication technology. Clearly people updating the colour of their bowel movement is not the cutting edge intention, but using online technology to reach further and faster is.

Facebook and all these stupid ways of communicating with friends is the same thing as CP. A good time waster.

I think the thing is people have to keep in mind that these are tools; not to be mistaken for real life.
When I got engaged rather than sending out some email to everybody, I mentioned it on Facebook. The people that cared said something, and the people that didn't; well they didn't.
I also like finding friends' birth announcements on FB. Saves me from getting a 15MB email with pictures, then getting in crap because I deleted it. As a guy I open those pictures, say "yep it's a baby. Yep, looks like the father." and then move on.

The people that hate Twitter and Facebook seem to be the ones that take it too seriously. It's a distraction. It's another way to communicate with people you may not see regularly. As ken said, you hear about what your friends are up to without having to call them. I know that since my wife and I had a kid, and have another on the way, I don't go out with my buddies as often as I once did. These are good was to stay in the loop with what is going on.
Sure some people post annoying stuff in their status updates and send you requests to join moronic groups. Though, if you find it hard to ignore that stuff you must freak out all the time with the annoying people you see on the internet.

Haha, see: most CP posters at some point of their life or on some day.
I mean you do make a good point. I just think it's another one of those things that some people take way too seriously. I mean I've had friends I had good conversations with before, and now they just tell me, 'see you on facebook', which is annoying.

Hey, if you've found a legitimate use for it then that's different. My experience with it, and with Twitterers, is that they don't have a legit use for it.
I don't mean to be nasty, but it seems to me that Twittering all your mundane activities is either a) vanity (thinking that anyone cares) or b) a high-tech popularity contest through which people take pride in having a large list of people who will "follow" them on twitter.
But whatever. I don't use twitter, it doesn't do anything to me. It is far less annoying than compulsive texters who have their goddamn phone beeping every 5 seconds and then getting "text deafness" while you sit there waiting for them to finish a sentence.

Haha that's true. But we actually TALK here. (One of the reasons I like a message board or the CP community better than the networking sites.)
I don't really talk or discuss with people on Facebook. I guess it's a good way to keep people updated, and like I said, some people use it as a tool and very well. But it makes others just weird.

Never tried Twitter, but my boss is a bit of a tech enthusiast and was using to update his status while he was at conferences. That's about as much as I know about it.
As for Facebook, I pretty much just use it to keep in touch with people out of the country. I hate when other people post photos and statuses of their everyday lives that no one cares about. Helga is thinking about maybe having some macaroni for dinner. Is this stuff important? No!!!

On a funny note, apparently Micheal Ian Black has declared "LeWar" - a Twitter "war" - on Levar Burton as he thinks it's outrageous that the former host of Reading Rainbow and STNG's be-visored engineer has 30,000 more subscribers than he. Really funny reading Black's POV/blog about it and the responses by Burton that has been picked up by the media.
