That is nuts...I used to work at Harry Hayes. Can't imagine seeing someone burn like that, in downtown, Calgary. Brutal.
Gives new meaning to the name Calgary Flames though. Now whenever someone asks why the hockey team is called the Flames, we have an answer other than fires in Atlanta.

I think the individual has deeper issues then job loss. It appears that he is going to survive with 40% of his body burned. A long stay in Ponoko is what the doctor ordered. I am sure losing a job sucks but life moves on for normal, sane folks.
Weird story.

I never said he's normal and sane. Just a guess at what put him over the edge. Chances are he has had compounding issues that put him in that mental state, but job loss can be the last straw for a lot of people. A lot of recent suicides, murder/suicides etc. have been triggered by job losses.

Wow.
I hate to say it's "cool", but really, it is kinda cool. Obviously a terrible thing to witness but it's such a famous moment in history.

That last comma is totally uncalled for. I can't think of a less appropriate comma placement.

Perfect birthday present for Darwin.
Some people just arent that smart. Even if his goal was killing himself, there are alot easier ways of doing it.

In another time and place someone setting themselves on fire had an effect on the population in a soviet occupied country, Czechoslovakia. They made his grave site a shrine and the Soviets had to take his remains away because people would flock to his grave. I went to the Czech Republic and this was still brought up by our teachers there as a major political act in a very important time in the Czech Republic as they thought they had shaken off some of the reigns of communism only to be re-occupied by tanks in the late 60's and brutally repressed.
Some of the jokes were funny but some of these comments about people setting themselves on fire just aren't very open minded towards situations where something like that could be an act that "proves a point" or makes a political statement.
But yeah, Calgary in today's world isn't quite the same as Soviet Occupied and terrorized Czechoslovkia. I'm sure that isn't the only example where it did make an impact. But some of you who lightly mock "anybody who sets themselves on fire" should take a few history lessons.

I'm not mocking anybody. I'm sorry, I just have a hard time feeling sorry for a guy who lights himself on fire. If it was a legitimate suicide attempt, he chose one of the most painful and least effective means of doing so - and in which case, I take it back.
If it was an attempt to make a statement, then I actually have to laugh at the absurdity, because Canada is probably one of the least supressive countries in the world to demonstrate your beliefs. Go to the media, make a website, form a protest. Do something other than dousing yourself in gasoline and lighting yourself on fire, if you want your voice to be heard.
I suppose it's only speculation on anybodies behalf until we find out the real reason, but given that he chose the Harry Hays building as the backdrop to pull this off in, I think it isn't out of the ordinary to assume it was in demonstration of something.

I was looking at the postings for this in Citybeat and saw that someone I know is reported missing! If bad things come in threes, I wonder what's next???

Wow, there are some callous people on this website. Some poor guy who is f'd up enough to set himself on fire is nothing more than an opportunity for a punchline for some of you. I would suggest re-examining your outlook.

On the news they said he might be Algerian and possibly up for deportation. There is some sort of citizenship office in that building and it might have been a protest.
None of this was confirmed and I don't know where they got it, but that's what they said.
The ambulance just happened to be driving by (with a patient in the back) when it happened and the EMT put it out with a fire extinguisher.
