IIRC it was the worst movie busts of all time when you compare box office takes to what it actually cost to make that movie.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Don't think I can get much more bored than that. Half star for Vince Vaughn, who was a little funny.

"Cuthroat Island"

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112760/

This movie cost something like $92 million and only grossed about $10 (that's dollars not $10 million.) It may be the biggest bomb of all time.

Waterworld, although critically a bomb did fairly well internationally IIRC.

See, this was one of the movies that was so bad, it ended up being good, for me, anyways. Clearly, you felt differently.

I will always remember the review in the paper for this movie, it called it "self burying garbage." I've never read a more accurate film review than that. But I still got a kick out of it.

And good call on Capt. Corelli's Mandolin. I was so looking forward to that because of Christian Bale, but it was just bad. Nick Cage... ugh.

Anything featuring Nicholas Cage you know is gonna be pure cheese.

True - but for my money, anything featuring Christian Bale is going to be great. This movie was an anomaly.

The only time I ever left the theater in the middle of a movie...Blair Witch 2. It was so bad we thought about asking for our money back even though we snuck in.

It's funny how different people have different senses of humor, Freddy got Fingered is one of my favorite comedies.

How about The Dukes of Hazard? Not even Daisy's Dukes could save that one.

I'm sure this has been mentioned already, but Ghost Rider.

Actually Im not even sure it counts as the worst movie Ive ever seen, because it was so cheesy that I was actually laughing throughout. haha I love how the only weakness for every bad guy was fire in some capacity. Lucky coincidence for Cage I guess...

Holy crap so many to mention:

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation - This was in my teens, and I was a huge MK Fanboy... LOVED part 1, part 2, I KNEW they were going to eff it up, still went to see it. Oh my god what a piece of crap. A 2 year old kid with his snot and a crayon could have done a better job.

Eye of the Beholder - No, not even Ashley Judd's titties could save this movie, what a load of crap it was - and even worse, we saw this for free (a friend worked at the theaters so we always saw movies for free) - I wanted my time back. And I was willing to give back the image of Judd's titties too, it was that bad. AWFUL.

Resident Evil 1 - How can you screw up a script that calls for a house full of zombies and other creatures that eat/kill humans??? They did somehow.

Street Fighter - Guile is the lead character??? Guile???? Wasn't this also Raul Julia's final movie too? God talk about going out with a bomb, holy crap what a horrible movie.

Atonement - saw this in the theaters... god what an awful movie, without reading the book I already knew what had happened, and that stupid girl should have been smacked around a couple hundred times. HATED this movie. Didn't help that I was missing the 9-6 beatdown the Flames were putting on the Lightning at the same time. Think I pissed off all the old people around me with my constant updating of the scores on my phone...

Rent - a bunch of gay artists who don't make any money singing about how bad it is that they are getting kicked out because they can't pay rent?? You don't pay rent, you don't get a place, that's called LIFE.

More to come later as I think of more...

Some of my favorite films are ones that I think most people think are terrible. Rat Phink A Boo Boo, for example, is cheap, ridiculous, and an example of guerrilla filmmaking at its finest. What this movie has (and the aforementioned Plan 9 from Outer Space), is a sense of fun. If a move is badly made, but made with a pure love of making movies, it can be a joy to watch.

Then there's the bulk of the studio tripe that may be competently made, but is completely devoid of soul, vision, or any emotion other than the desire to make buck. But because there's some sort of craftsmanship that goes into these films, I find it hard to call any of them the worst. Of that ilk, I would say Event Horizon.

For me, the worst film I've ever watched was Night Train to Mundo Fine (aka Red Zone Cuba). And yes, I have seen it without the MST3K. This piece of utter garbage has nothing going for it. No talent, a repulsive political agenda, zero continuity, and possibly the most unsympathetic characters ever written. It makes me sick just to think about it.

If you're interested in Tarkovsky, check out "Stalker". It's hard to describe, but it's an absolutely enthralling film.

Anyways, Star Wars Episode I, Independence Day, anything with Travolta in it except Pulp Fiction, Catwoman, and The Spanish Prisoner (you have to brain-dead not to see what's actually going on) are massive stinkies.

Nicolas Cage was great in Raising Arizona and didn't ruin Rumblefish, but other than that I can see the hate, especially in recent years.

The New World (with Colin Farrel) is probably one of the worst I've ever seen.

I agree with one of the previous posters... this is kind of out of hand.

Lord of the Rings is possibly the best trilogy ever and probably in the running for the best movies ever.

The original Matrix movie is fantastic... untouchable. #2 and #3 were not as good but definitely not bad movies.

There are a lot of others on here that have been mentioned that I just shake my head at... some truly great movies in this thread.

Crazy coincidence - I just got a "lifeline" call from a friend all the way in Maine who needed to know who wrote the story ("Roadside Picnic") that Stalker was based on. I've been trying to track down a copy, but there was only ever one English edition from the 70's, and it's really rare and expensive.

I've seen every Tarkovsky film, many in theatres, and have had friends walk out, and once a theatre that was half asleep by the end (I think that was Nostalgia). Same thing with some of the Greenaway films. Guess there's no accounting for taste, but that's the moral of this thread...

Many good calls in this thread, but I am not going to list straight-to-video B rate movies, as I don’t watch them at all, but instead I am going to list A movies I hated:

Children of men. Good god. Juliane Moore knew why did she get killed off in the first 10 minutes of the movies. One of the stupidest stories ever written with the worst lead actress money can buy you.

Sunshine. Decent beginning, but the middle and end of the movie rivaled Doom. No scratch that, Doom was at least unintentionally funny.

Rescue Dawn. Was Christian Bale supposed to play a ######? Anyway, he did. Were the Laos camp soldiers and prisoners supposed to play ######s too? Well, they did. The whole movie was ######ed.

No country for old men. Just flat our ridiculous. Sorry I mean artsy. No I mean ridiculous.

12 Monkeys. I don’t really remember what it was all about, but I remember I turned the VCR player off midway through. Didn’t ask for a refund though.

Die Hard 4. Geriatric Willis balancing on a wing of a fighter jet. Yeah I’m gonna watch that one again.

Happy Gilmore. I hate any and every Adam Sandler movie.

Hostel. Eli Roth is a joke, not a director. Probably the stupidest movies of all time.

Eastern Promises. Simply a laughable, unoriginal and downright ridiculous “portrayal” of Russian mafia in London. Pickpoketers on the Tube operate on a more sophisticated level than sad sack characters in this travesty.
