I found the first few moments a bit amusing but I find the real things more amusing.
Seriously though, why is it ok for The Simpsons, Family Guy, Southpark, Team America whatever, etc to make fun of everything for the sake of teh funny, but this isn't ok? Because they're better at it?

Do people actually suggest that to you?
Never happens to me and I live in the bible belt.
In any case, throw back bible verse..."Judge not lest ye be judged"

Agreed. Noone can know if anyone else is going to Hell, damnit! That's my worst pet peeve. Tell them they're going to Hell for trying to take judgement day away from their "god" and laugh in their face for damning themselves hahaha.

Did anyone say it wasn't ok? honest question. I said it wasn't funny. Neither is the Simpsons , but South Park and Family Guy DEFINITELY do it better!

The Simpsons/Family Guy are not a focus group going directly after a single religious denomination. They spread the humour around, and I actually see a huge difference in that. I love those shows mang!

Usually comes wrapped in a tidy little "save your soul" type comment. Not so much "you don't wanna go to hell, do ya?" though that has been tossed around before.
Edit** and as for who says this, more often than not it is family.

I think that's the basic point of this though; for some reason religion IS touchy and many think criticizing it or those who follow shouldn't be allowed, when their point is that it SHOULD be ok, as much as it is ok to call someone out for thinking anything else they think is foolish.
Think of it this way, instead of hate the sin love the sinner, it's hate the religion love the religious. It's not personal.

Saying attacking someone's religious beliefs is hate literature is like saying attacking someone's political slant is hate literature.. It's something one believes, not something one is (such as black or gay or Scottish).

Hate literature is when someone calls for violent acts to be committed against a person or group of individuals.
Anyone is free to make fun of religious people (or atheists, or any other group) until they're blue in the face as long as they're not actively promoting threatening or violent acts against that group.
Also, in case anyone didn't know, Landover Baptist is a ficticious religious sect with completely over-the-top views. Their website is basicly one big satire, mocking the "God Hates Fags" crowd and their ilk. The really sad thing is that there's many people out there who both a) take their views seriously and b) agree with them.

Well atheists don't really target any denomination either, anything with a deity really.

I find a big difference between trying to tell someone about your religion, and telling them they're going to hell.
But I also think there is a difference between talking about it, and shoving it down someone's throat.
Too many times the latter happens.

I can't judge that with any certainty pertaining to every scenario, but I can observe and develop personal opinions based on whether they actually follow the doctrines of their religion or not.
For examples, some "Christian" people hold signs that say "God hates fags" or whatever. Well, (in Christian doctrine) God doesn't actually hate anyone. They clearly misunderstand or are just plain going against the teachings of Christianity, and therefore in my eyes aren't actually Christian. They might be something else... some other fringe religion based on some confused or mis-construed aspects of Christianity, but they are saying something else.
That's pretty black and white to me.
|
I'm not trying to be smug, and that explanation isn't very black and white.
You decry the judgemental ######bags, but you have to admit that you go on to do a fair amount of judging yourself.
The people you judge to be "non-Christian" would, as you well know, consider you to be the same. They would say you are going against the teachings of Christianity and that you misunderstand or misconstrue the whole business.
Who is right?

I think the whole 'hate' thing is pretty obvious if you just 'read' the Bible.
I seriously have no IDEA how Phelps and his ilk even remotely get that message from anywhere in the Bible.

That's just not true, but I think we've been down that road and you and I have to agree to disagree. Religion is so deep rooted that it compels people. It's not an opinion, its a part of people, whether you can wrap your head around it or not. I hope you understand that's not a shot or anything at you, its just that I can see why you may not understand the severity of someone's dedication to their beleifs if you have never been a religious person yourself. People die for their religion man, it's not an opinion, or something they chose to beleive. It's a staple of their lives that is emedded in them. It's a relationship with God that truly exists, and not everyone understands that.

I didn't say I judge people actually. I don't judge people. I sometimes witness their personal contradictions.

well ATR if every Christian was like you, then i don't think we'd ever see these videos. unfortunately though much like Islam, there is a very determined and vocal minority that give a bad name to the majority. it's just that these fundamentalists use politics and courtrooms to try and enforce their beliefs on everyone, instead of guns or bombs. have you noticed that the sharp increase in anti-christian/pro-atheism activists is roughly on par with the sharp increase in "creationism in schools" debate and other hot button religious topics in politics?
so it may be a very small percentage of Christians who try to put the bible into public schools, or hold up signs saying "God Hates Fags", but unfortunately for you they are very loud in their rhetoric and cast a bad light on the entire group. i think that Muslims probably feel much the same way

What about the whole Sodom & Gomorrah/fire and brimstone bit?
Not saying their interpretation is correct (or incorrect), but obviously the topic comes up.
