The Monahan / Lindholm comparison is brutal. One has been very consistent while the other one is trying to regain his former form.
Contending teams are acquiring Lindholm at a higher price because they want to re-sign Lindholm. Any team acquiring Monahan are likely only grabbing him as a rental.

NHL trade candidates under the radar: 10 players who are falling out of favour
Philip Broberg, Edmonton Oilers
Nick Robertson, Toronto Maple Leafs
Morgan Frost, Philadelphia Flyers
Oliver Wahlstrom, New York Islanders
Arthur Kaliyev, Los Angeles Kings
Pierre-Olivier Joseph, Pittsburgh Penguins
Victor Olofsson, Buffalo Sabres
Erik Brännström, Ottawa Senators
Alexandre Texier, Columbus Blue Jackets
Jonatan Berggren, Detroit Red Wings
|
Frost and Kaliyev are the most intriguing of the bunch.

Probably going to get ripped for this proposal but here it goes.
Leafs have clearly been after Tanev.
Reaves is disgruntled there, but has 2 more years at 1.35.
If the flames committed to going young, would it be the worst deal to see:
Tanev (50%)
for
Reaves
2024 1st
Prospect (likely B level)

I don't think they have any business making that desperation trade. I think they had their chance to make moves and get Zadorov and Treliving whiffed.

Part 2 of the Duhatschek article.
Paywall so only some highlights:
Quote:
To Devils: Jacob Markstrom, Chris Tanev
To Flames: 2025 first-round pick, 2024 third-round pick, Seamus Casey, Vitek Vanecek/Akira Schmid
Calgary probably says no — but that’s because Casey is 5-foot-9
Calgary does want to put a young center into the organization
Tanev will likely be traded at the deadline
Markstrom. I don’t believe the Flames are interested in trading him
if Holtz were made available, the Devils could probably pry Tanev and something else from the Flames.
|
Quote:
To Jets: Elias Lindholm
To Flames: Conditional 2024 second-round pick (Montreal’s second-round pick — becomes a first if Winnipeg makes the Stanley Cup Final), 2025 second-round pick (Jets), Logan Stanley or Declan Chisholm
Jets perspective, Lindholm does look like the perfect fit
compensation going Calgary’s way, it’s pretty meh. Stanley has had nothing but bad injury luck and is already 25. Chisholm is 24 and probably tops out as a seventh defenseman
|
And then a bunch of dumb one sided trades that don't make any sense.
One trade idea had Swayman going to Detroit, Lindholm going to Boston, prospects to Calgary. Duhatschek says Boston wont trade Swayman which I agree with. But what would the deal have to look like if it was Ulmark going to Detroit?

This is easily Lindholm's worst year but I still don't think Monahan and Lindy are on the same level.

Yeah, I was reading the 1st one and thinking: change Casey to Holtz and that is a pretty decent proposal.
Then I read the 2nd one and was like: waaat?

Readers have sent him trade ideas and he is providing his feedback.
Don't think he just picks and chooses only the smart people, but some that allow him to expand on reasons why and what teams are looking for.

The one thing that I like about articles like that, is that you get a small window into what another fanbase, or journalists covering another team, are thinking. It identifies wants and needs that Flames fans probably don't even know are there.
This example :
To Devils: Jacob Markstrom, Chris Tanev
To Flames: 2025 first-round pick, 2024 third-round pick, Seamus Casey, Vitek Vanecek/Akira Schmid
might not work for Calgary, but a realistic alternative :
To Devils: Jacob Markstrom, Chris Tanev
To Flames: 2024 second-round pick, Alex Holtz, Vitek Vanecek
might work, as Jersey gets their full 'ask'. Calgary takes the more expensive goalie and a lesser pick for the prospect with a higher ceiling. Everyone wins?

Lindholm but it really comes down to the fit as to get the best out of Lindholm a team needs to ensure that they have a talented winger to play with him and hope they have chemistry or you run the risk of overpaying for a center that doesn't hurt you when he's not scoring but he may not do a lot of scoring.

Looks like we could build a solid Swede lines if we trade for them.

All of that applies to Monahan except without the "doesn't hurt you when he's not scoring" part.
And "doesn't hurt you" is a little but of an understatement. Lindholm can be a shutdown centre. He just plays on a team where another guy can do that as well.

Let's see what each's next contract looks like.

Neither contract will be with us so I don’t care about that.
I only care about the return when our guy gets traded.
Sean’s numbers say he is not getting easy zone starts and face offs and is still producing like Lindholm. He is cheaper even if the Flames retain.

Can he be? I haven't seen it. Above average defensively for sure and good enough to cover for pinching wingers like Gaudreau or Tkachuk. Not sure about him ever going head to head with opponents top lines and shutting them down. That's usually always been Backlund's role because he's better at it.
