The Leafs are obviously going for it and could very well carry Nylander through to free agency. That isn't what I consider to be in the long term plans though.
If he signs a sweetheart deal, no doubt they will keep him. It's difficult to see them giving him what he wants though seeing as they have 3 other forwards ahead of him making close to $11 million per season or more.

I think the Leafs believe the Nylander camp will eventually come down in price as the Leafs is the only team he wants to play for and they know it. Also they believe that Tavares is going to take a big paycut on his next deal. I think even if Nylander makes it to UFA he probably still ends up back in Toronto.

The Leafs also have to come up with a new D-core, Goalie, and new contracts for Bertuzzi (and potentially Domi) after this season. They have their work cut out for them.

Domi is another guy who will sign a sweetheart deal to stay. Bertuzzi is a pure rental. They certainly do have their work cut out for them but they do have an advantage of having players that are willing to take a decent cut to stay there.

Who?
I mean....Nylander held out til December for his last deal, and was the big winner in that stare down.
Matthews just signed the biggest AAV in league history i believe.
Marner bent them over completely....particularly when compared to other deals league wide at that time.
Tavares got more money than anyone else would have given him.
Maybe Reilly is a bit of a discount? He also has some flaws in his game.
I just dont see the hometown discount in any way shape or form, at least among the top of the roster.

No, I really never seen Toronto as a discount franchise, either. I can't think of any example of it. Players wanting ot play there? For sure. But being paid the most they can negotiate.

Giordano signed a huge discount. Jarnkrok signed for cheap. So did Domi.
Calgary has had a few too. Glencross definitely did. I could see Dube doing it.

Have the Leafs ever had a player who took a significant sweetheart deal to play in Toronto? I know folks say it but I can’t remember a player who has actually done it.

Nylander wants to get paid. What evidence do we have that he only wants to play in Toronto? If Tre believes that, he's even dumber and more arrogant than his final 12 months in Calgary indicate. And that is saying something.

Nylander deserves his payday. 87-point wingers who perform in the playoffs definitely don't grow on trees.

Because he said as much to Friedman when he was in Sweden. He has also said it before, Nylander bleeds blue.

I could see that too. Ran into him earlier in the summer on 17th, chatted a bit and he said he loves it here and Calgary is the only place he wants to play in. Not really earth-shattering news here, but take that for what it's worth.

Everybody bleeds the colour of the team currently paying them. It’s rare for a player to indicate otherwise.

Players receive media training, and that includes being trained to say they're publicly committed to their current team until they're not.

Taking a discount on a retirement or year to year “let’s see how it goes” contract is a bit different than taking one for the largest contract of a career.

Off the top of my head Giordano, and Jarnkrok. Spezza as well.

Jarnkrok? He signed a 4 year deal and I don’t think it was for a discount. Gio and Spezza were ancient when they signed those deals similar to Michael Stone staying in Calgary.

They all still took discounts. Gio was still playing at a high level with Seattle, and I'm sure most Flames fans would've loved to have him back for league min. Jarnkrok was and is a 40P forward, he signed for $2M. I think Spezza was close to 0.5PPG at the time as well. The point was that there were players taking discounts to play for the Leafs.
I'm not saying Nylander is going to take a discount.

Gio will be lucky to finish the contract he signed. He is 40 years old and looked washed in the playoffs. Spezza was also at the end of his career I am not sure other offers were out there or not. Both guys definitely wanted to play in their hometown as their careers end because the Leafs are a contender.
I don’t think Jarnkrok took a discount. He has never scored 40pts in his career (definitely paced for that in years past but his career high is 39pts)
