The majority of GM’s think otherwise.

Agreed that most likely no one has met the process set yet. The rumoured devils offer was good and so close. Hammer it out! I hope we’re not holding out for a 3rd for example. We may never know though.

Makes sense to me.
I agree that mine was probably optimistic but also agree I don't think it's wildly optimistic. Suppose it depends what NJ values Mercer as mainly, and what we value retention as.

Let's suppose "universally" Markstrom is worth a 1st + something. We feel that something is Mercer and NJ feels that's too much. Then looking at retention, let's say 50% for 2.5 years(!) is worth a 1st + 3rd. We think that's Casey + 3rd. Drop the 3rd, add that value into Mercer and I don't think that's unreasonable. The best player currently in the deal would be Markstrom.

Then Tanev, is it just a conditional 1st? Maybe, but it seems the prevailing thought is a 2nd + prospect/player, and Connie is holding out for a conditional 1st. In the case I proposed, that condition is pretty unlikely (NJ winning the cup), and thus it's realistically just a 2nd. Perhaps Holtz is a bit rich for the extra in the deal, but Tanev isn't Markstrom, he's a pending UFA and the market is much higher for him I'd wager. The retention on Tanev was to balance the Holtz equation a bit (also, I'm not sure what NJ's capspace is looking like).

Ultimately, I think it'd be an amazing return and likely across the league it may seem like a steal for us, until it solidifies a decent NJ team and sets them up for a run. Outside of the picks and Casey, NJ is losing a current 2nd/3rd line center, a 4th line winger. We give up a #1 goalie + a number 3/4 steady defenseman, both of whom would be the best player in the deal currently, plus over 10million in real money, + 3m in cap for 2 years.

Honestly, I don't think it's ridiculous?

Even if he is no better than Holtz (I think he is, but the difference probably isn't huge), the big issue for the Flames is that we are loaded on wing and have zero Cs under 30.

Holtz doesn't move the needle much for our lineup, Mercer does.

Just read that in the last 32 thoughts Friedman indicated Hanifin would extend for TB, Florida, Boston, or New Jersey. I read that from a tweet, didn't listen to it. I think the Devils would be smart to try and get both Markstrom and Hanifin, they need both.

Agreed, they’re both fantastic fits time-wise too.

Hanifin, Hamilton, L. Hughes, Nemec, J. Hughes, Hischier, and Markstrom is a Stanley Cup team. That core is unreal.

Hischier was really, really good today.

As was Timo, still not playing up to his contract, but made it a bit less awful.

Maybe that's why it's taking so long.

Markstrom(retain), Hanifin(retain, extension), Rooney for Mercer, Holtz, Casey, Vanacek, 1st ?

What do summer buyouts have to do with the trade deadline?

More sellers to tank the market? Are there better UFA players than Hanifin and Tanev available from any team in the D trade market this year? Doesn’t matter which teams fall into sellers, those two are still going to be the most desired.

If you have a Holtz, suddenly you can move mangiapane and duehr and have a natural successor to kuzmenko.

When you’re posting a gif you want to see the URL end in .gif

If you check your post it doesn’t end in gif and won’t display the image correctly
