Craig with a lengthy podcast interview.
http://iphone.tsn.ca/tsnpodcasts/DC_Episode6_May20.mp3
Some points. Mentions the combine, interviews with prospects, ways that teams approach the draft. Even mentions "the list" which he says most teams use Bob McKenzie's list as The List in order to get a sense of where players will go. Says Bob's list is proven time over to be the most accurate sense of where players go.
Talks about the top 4, said Draisatl could potentially go 1st overall based on his World Championship performance. Says that he's producing against NHLers which is essentially what scouting is trying to do, to evaluate how a player would play in the NHL.
His list is still most likely Reinhart, Bennett, Ekblad, Draisatl.

I agree....CHL leagues seem similar. Makes me wonder why then a team spreads scouting across all parts of the world. Must be an argument out there to focus more on one league like the WHL and scout the heck out of every game. Specialize in that one league. Find some Jamie Benn's, etc. Scout other leagues enough to cover off the 1st rounders which could come from anywhere, but rounds 2 or 3 through 7 might be more thoughtful choices if they all come from one league.

I would not be surprised to see Draisaitl go 1 or 2, he is a very big body already, has the skillset that any team would make good use of and I just feel he has a lot more upside to his game. But if the draft went like Button says, I would be a very happy camper come July 1! Have to remember this is a kid that only just played his second year on a smaller ice surface(and on a crappy team), give him a few more years and he could be something special.

Oh wow, I didn't realize Hunter Smith (RW, 6'5, Oshawa Generals) has really jumped the rankings. Used to be a late 3rd, maybe early 4th, but now he is projected to be a mid 2nd.
Hopefully we can snag him with the Berra pick.

Have never changed my mind so much over the top few of the draft.
#1 - Bennett
#2 - Reinhart
#3 - Draisaitl

With 4 top choices it's good to be picking after the Oilers. If ours turns out to be better we get bragging rights. If theirs is better, well they picked ahead of us, so it's normal.

We have been fortunate that the past two drafts have had a ton of quality so that even though we don't have a top pick, we are still getting an awesome player.
Getting Monahan/Bennett, Draisaitl, Reinhart when you are picking 6th overall and 4th overall is ridiculous. Usually you get someone that's just a decent secondary piece like Zibanejad, or Evander Kane, instead of two 1st line centers.

Oh how I dislike this site and it's slideshows but somehow I guess i gave them my email address, so maybe once a month I'll look at an article.

from that list, #10 Aaron Haydon is one of my favourites for one of our 2nds. He's basically a 6-4 Sieloff. Smash

A+ for enthusiasm. But it's a bit early to suggest those players are going to be better than guys like Kane.

Kane had 41 points this year and Zibanejad 33, Monahan had 34, and also played 12 more games than Kane (6 more than Zib) but is in his rookie year, Kane is in his 5th and Zibanejad's 3rd. I'd be surprised if Monahan didn't hit 40 points next year, especially if he gets more responsibility and better linemates than Joe Colborne.
I view all three of Draisaitl, Reinhart and Bennett as being in the same ballpark as Monahan give or take. I think every single one of us would be disappointed if whomever we take at 4 is only a 35-45 point getter 3+ years into his career. People are wanting to dump Baertschi and he was at a 35ish point pace.
Plus none of the 4 guys (3 potential players + Monahan) seem to have the attitude problem that Kane does.

I am not saying they won't be as good or better than those players. But you are making some pretty large assumptions. One, that both of our guys will work out. And two, that the guys on the other list won't be more than secondary players.
Unless you have a crystal ball of some sort saying with relative certainty that Monahan and our first this season will end up as better players than Kane, etc is a leap.

I like him too- seems to come with pretty good reviews all around: good skater with size and toughness, and a touch of offensive skill too.

Chances are our will turn out better anyway, they'll find a way to ruin their pick.
