Interesting how this just may have completely backfired on the telcos. Public attention to internet policy and regulation has never been more intensive and insightful. This could be the new beginning of more discerned and engaged regulation of the 'market.'

I would imagine that it would relate exclusively to the wholesale rates to independent ISPs. But, I can't imagine Shaw pulling a stunt like this if the CRTC hadn't effectively killed the small competition.

Shaw should be free to set their own rates and consumers should be free to shop around. Shaw/Bell/Rogers shouldn't be able to set the rates of competitors beyond the actual cost plus a realistic wholesale markup.

When/if the CRTC decision is revered and Teksavvy can be competitive again, I'd put money on these caps quietly disappearing from Shaw's service. Or at least the monetary enforcement of them.

weird i've torrented quite a bit more than past months as well as doing my regular surfing/gaming/streaming but my meter for january is at a ridiculously low 4 GB total

Last month I totaled 220GB and half way through this month I am at 140GB. My cap is 60GB...

That seems insanely high. I think I should change the password on my wireless just to be on the safe side.

I'll take it easy for the next month and I should be okay. I think it's my online backup that is killing me. Plus I've downloaded a bunch on Xbox, some iTunes HD TV shows and some torrents. I've really been punishing my internets.

I just checked my usage. I download 1080p rips all the time and it says I'm around 200gb for the previous 3 time periods. I find the 200gb low actually.

I recall people in this thread saying Telus internet is unlimited. I talked to two people at Telus and they said Optik high speed's cap is 125GB and the turbo is 250GB. I got mixed answers on what happens if you go over. One said nothing for now, but the cap will probably be enforced in the future. The other said they would send a warning letter and if you go over again they would charge $2 for every GB over.

I have heard mixed things also. A friend of mine called today and he was told that the cap will likely be enforced sooner rather than later.

Obviously, the CRTC decision is setting the precedent that the large ISPs were hoping for. Why wouldn't they all follow suit? Afterall, the federal regulator has given them its blessing.

Personally, I think that Telus is stalling so they can appear as the reasonable choice in the midst of the public scrutiny. If independent ISPs are allowed to compete again, the caps will remain unenforced execpt in extreme situations. If the CRTC decision is upheld, they'll join their oligopoly counterparts and get their slice of the overage pie.

True usage based billing would benefit you. A low, fixed monthly cost for access, and then billed by the megabyte. Not unlike other utilities. Unfortunately, UBB as the big ISPs define it is a high, fixed monthly fee with disproportionate and punitive overages. If you use less, tough. But if you go over, you're going to feel it.

Fortunately for me the money doesn't come out of my pocket. My internet is paid for by my employer. There was a time when I would have used so much more but by the time I'm on my computer I'm just too tired to do anything other than quickly read email and calgarypuck.

I heard that if you have Optic TV + their internet there is no limit since the TV signal comes in like an internet feed (IPTV or something?) and they can't tell you to not watch tv.

That's not true. I talked to Telus today (2 different people and apparently it's on their website) Optik high speed cap is 125GB per month and the Optik high speed turbo cap is 250GB per month. They can charge $2 per GB over the limit, but it's not clear (to me at least) on how they are enforcing it, if at all.

actually flaming choy is correct. at this time telus cannot tell the difference. and for non tv clients the cap isnt enforced with the charges. you get a warning if you are a consitent abuser, which could lead to a suspension of service
