All this jersey talk forgets what is maybe the biggest difference between the
retro look and the current style: pants. From 1980 to 1994 the Flames had red pants, and ever since it's been black pants, except for the throwbacks.
So yeah, this has the right idea. (Although I'm not a huge fan of that jersey.)

Go back to red pants, and it doesn't matter that much how the stripes go. It will still be a recognizable Flames look.
(As long as they keep some of the yellow. Put too little yellow and we start to look like the Devils. Our third jerseys are pretty much just a Devils jersey (which has been essentially the same for 20+ years) with a Calgary wordmark. That's just stupid.)
