Premier insiders get dumped by major stations and have to start basement blogs?
I didn't know LeBrun retired.

I agree that he seems to now be the most well-connected NHL insider, even above Friedman, Dreger, Weekes, etc.
In 2022 he had a near-monopoly on the trade deadline and draft.

He still breaks trades and his articles usually have a lot more tidbits especially regarding the Treliving news and his contract.
Hes still the best in the business and a professional unlike some people.

Is he premier?
I just haven't found the depth of his insider information to be that deep. I also haven't found his knowledge or perspective on the game and business to be that experienced and sophisticated. I always get "the regular go-to guest who's a guest because he's under a contract" during his segments, not because the topic warrants speaking to him specifically and don't feel like much has been added to a conversation.
Part of the problem is too much airtime and not enough meat so it's not all his fault. He's expected to be an "insider" but ends up beating dead horses or talking Kylington when there's no reason to.

As much as the virtue signalers have gone out of their way to rip on those for wife blaming since last summer, there appears to be enough here to really point to the wife.
Now and then, it appears, this is actually the case.
I dont think it's off base as a Flames fan to be a bit angry about it.
Happy wife, happy life, I guess. But if the reason for angling John towards Columbus was to work at a nice hospital and be near her BFF (or wherever the rumour was) at the expense of sewering the remainder of Johnny's career on a poor organization, that's a little selfish of her.
But that's only if that was the case. We don't have all the information. So while we can be mad, we should also pump the brakes a little. What's done is done, and we'll probably never know.
I still don't agree with the decision. And I don't think johnny feels that great about being -27 on a lottery team that isn't home. But they were entitled to a making that poor decision at the time. So while it was probably a blunder career-wise, he still the gave the final verdict and put his foot down. Nothing we nor the Flames could do.

Who cares if his wife's desires factored into the decision? It's her life too and he should take her desires into the decision making. He was at a point where he was able to chose where to play and didn't owe the Flames anything.
Asset management for the Flames wasn't his job.

At the end of the day, it's more unfortunate than anything
Hopefully a cautionary tale for the team when dealing with future UFAs that they believe have mutual interest in re-signing
You can never be too sure. They should never let the future of their team come down to the 11th hour. It's too much risk. Wrap up the extension months ahead or have a contingency plan
They bent too much for Johnny's camp and left themselves vulnerable to being left at the altar

Yeah, probably.

If this is true.
The man gave up $16M to accommodate his wife's requests. That's likely going to be 10-15% of his career earnings. If you think of it that way, that's actually a big amount that he gave up. Hope he ends up not regretting that decision - both bank account wise and professionally.
As someone who is married and made collective decisions with the family for career purposes where travel and moving is involved, I don't think I could give up 10-15% of my career earnings simply to accommodate my wife but I don't think she would ever ask that of me either. On a human level, these kinds of decisions in life are highly impactful on a mental level.

We just need to stop yo-yo'ing between 'Bargaining' and 'Depression' and move on to Acceptance.
We dont know why he did it. We wont know why he did it. But he did it and its time to move along.

In real dollars 10-15% is a lot but to think of someone taking $100k instead of $110k isn't that big a deal especially considering all that is simply disposable income. What should be separated here is he's negotiating in bad faith, even though he doesn't knowingly know what his wife wanted. It's just piss poor communication between them as a couple that trickled down to the negotiation table. That discussion with his wife should have occurred way earlier. Seems to be his style though, during his sulking years. While at this point it's under the bridge, it's annoying at the very least when he gets a pass because it's his wife's needs. That should have been an earlier discussion, if anything. No excuses.

Or...and hear me out for a second...perhaps management should also consult and discuss everything with the spouse as part of the negotiation process. That's the real lesson here.
I'm blown away that this isn't the case already for major life altering decisions like signing an 8 year deal, but it seems like it isn't standard policy. Court the wife and she'll get the player to sign on the dotted line if he's on the fence.

Meh, life is life. You only get one of them. If Johnny had to make a sacrifice for his family over his own wants and needs, so be it

Someone should go through this thread and look at how some posters vilified those who said "well logically it's probably that the wife doesn't want to be here"
