I still don't understand why he didn't sign in NJ? More money, way closer to home... Is NJ just an absolutely trash city or what?

I didn't say anything else, just inferred that it may be wise to cut with absolutism in your future projections regarding this player, given that you were so firmly, diametrically wrong on the last one.

NJ is a state. The New Jersey Devils play in Newark, which is effectively part of NYC.

I dont know what happened to the NJ deal.
Kind of why I relate the entire situation back and am rather convinced his agent screwed this pooch big time.
The NJ offer just seemed to disappear and the team he was throwing himself at in Philly didnt even bother to make an offer.
Thats part of what makes this scenario just so strange yet inexplicably fascinating.

Holy ####. My whole life I thought New Jersey was a city lmao. Must of been something with there being a Jersey city that confused me. If it’s pretty much NYC I can see the appeal of not wanting to live there.

I never said anything absolute though, just that I was confident Columbus would not be a playoff team.

So take this fwiw.
I day trade with a guy who plays summer league w Johnny. Went for dinner w him and Tony DeAngelo on the weekend. I was telling him to give Johnny crap about not signing in Calgary, and he said that everybody in his inner circle that plays hockey, has been giving him crap about it.
I think he knows he made a poor hockey decision. But it is what it is.
Anyways, that's all folks

Pulling the trigger on going to Columbus just reeks of panic.
But yes, leave Gaudreau's wife out of it. I would be 100% certain that she had nothing to do with him pulling the trigger on going to Columbus.
Zero.
It was probably just the last option available that satisfied their mutual criteria.

I don't know about villain, but I agree Gross is the culprit of incompetence here, even if that means failing to appropriately manage his incompetent client...that's pretty much the whole job of an agent in a nutshell (NHL business/UFA market intelligence isn't a core-competency of an NHL player - unless they want to represent themselves).
How can an agent advocate for his client if he doesn't understand the client's true desires? If the client doesn't understand them himself, then job #1 is helping him figure that out - with the experience and market knowledge a good agent should have.
All the breakdowns could trace back to that lack of understanding between agent and client. Add the fact that Gross would be personally benefit most by taking the largest total value deal...I think it's possible Gross thought he could steer Johnny, instead of helping Johnny [and his family] steer the ship themselves.

You said bottom 3 team in the East. Which would be a pretty big drop from their 10th place finish last year.

Johnny on line 1 and Huberdeau on Line 2 would have been pretty awesome. But if Johnny stays Tkachuk probably does too.

No doubt - if Gross had known that Gaudreau was having second thoughts about re-signing in Calgary, he could have pushed for a sign and trade. It would have had the potential to work out better for all parties involved (better for Gaudreau/Gross to get the 8th year and higher overall contract value, likely better for the team getting Gaudreau as they could probably get a slightly lower cap hit over 8 years vs. 7, better for the Flames in possibly getting some value back in the trade). Given what we saw with the Tkachuk trade, I think Treliving would have been amenable to it if Gaudreau had been up front about wanting to explore his options elsewhere.

I'm pretty much over it now, and at this point I'll forever be indifferent to Gaudreau. He won't really have much of a legacy to me. Good memory of this past season. BUT.. his wife almost certainly had a lot to say about where they were going, and I do believe it was not necessarily anti-Calgary, but was definitely anti-Canada. Not because Canada isn't nice, but she had a pretty weird stance on masking as a healthcare provider. A lot of her Twitter activity outside of boosting Johnny was celebrating removing mask requirements.
So if she's not happy living in a country that may or may not enact more restrictions than Freedom USA.. no way she's okay with Johnny signing an extension. That's not to say anything bad about Johnny, but I think that's pretty naive for someone whose profession is pediatric healthcare.

Sherlock Holmes here has a clue. His wife, the nurse, didn't like masking, so she coerced her husband to leave a country and leave $15MM on the table because covid and masking.
Jesus christ you guys are getting pretty embarrassing with this kind of garbage. You actually followed her on twitter to examine possible reasons she talked JG out of signing in Calgary. Just pathetic.

I did not follow her, her tweets are public. I'm not even saying anything wrong other than I think it's weird when healthcare providers don't understand the efficacy of masks.
