He was using that as an example of what he believed was Howse's problem. The context was something like " For example - What kind of 19 year old doesn't get their license? He thinks he's just gonna somehow make to the NHL...
Anyways, he did say he had an amazing shot, he just felt that Howse lacks what I'm guessing he sees as work ethic. He wasn't judging the no license thing on it's own merit, rather using it as an example of his character. Maybe you don't see it that way, but I guess that's the "flip" he gives about it. I had info from two people who have experience with these young players and everyone gets defensive and focuses on the tiny detail.

I want to see what a real NHL head coach says about Howse's work ethic before I write him off as lazy. Maybe he just didn't care in his last year of junior. It happens, kids get bored. It'll be interesting to see if Sutter can refocus him, or if he shows up to training camp ready for a new challenge.
I'll wait to pass judgement on this kid. Next season should give us a good read on where Howse is at in his development.

This could also just be a way for his old coach to motivate him. I think it's nice to have a higher risk skill player in the system for a change. Work ethic is something that can be taught and learned in the AHL, whereas natural skill can't be given by the coaches. If he doesn't work hard enough or take the AHL seriously, he's going to be humbled pretty quickly. Similar thing happened with Brodie and he figured it out. We'll see if Howse steps up to the challenge, and I hope he will.

It's been a tough 1st pro season for Howse, but sounds like he is back in the line-up tonight after an injury. Here's hoping he can score his 1st pro goal tonight!

Ward said that if he was most proud of any one player this year, it is Howse.

“The guy has no numbers for us at all and he’s coming off 53 goals in the WHL, but this guy has made so many life changes and physical changes that he’s able to finally manage himself to be in the position of a good pro. It’s taken him to February 9th and it’s taken him almost this whole year to get to this spot. If you said, what are you proud of? This guy has chiseled 15-18 pounds off him. He’s changed physically; he’s matured off the ice.

Sidenote, talking with Greg Drinnan (local WHL scribe who's been around the block a tonne and is highly regarded by guys like Bob Mckenzie, etc), he says watching Ryan is like watching a lot of other talented guys who disappear for long stretches. He doesn't think Ryan will make it either

Well, at least he led to the Flames getting Horak. So, he did more to help the Flames than a lot of Sutter's picks.
