That's going to be half of Tkachuk contract gone with no firsts and anyone in the pipeline to come into a capped out roster. I love it

He's playing a very different style of game here. There was encouragement for wide open play in Florida, and when he would make a gaff it would be egregious because there was no back up in that system.

Here, he still makes the odd gaff but there's a much better structure to support those mistakes. He always was an incredible guy with the stick and anticipating passes or breaking up plays. He's fantastic at denying entry and then quickly transitioning to the offensive side. The 2nd part of that hasn't been as prominent here...yet. He does have it in him, so look for that to happen more as he gets more comfortable in Calgary.

I'm just glad that nobody was hammering him the way people were hammering Huberdeau for struggling to adapt in the first 20-30 games. Now you will hopefully all see why I was such a big fan of this trade. Both Weegar and Huberdeau move the needle for teams they play on.

Personally I've been thrilled with Weegar so far, he's like our new Brodie

This is key with Weegar - he is elite at so many things. He doesn’t have That next-level skill that the Norris level guys do.

He scored 45 points last year and only three came on the man advantage.

To me, that indicates his points came from getting the puck up ice and on net quickly, playing in a wide open system.

Not from any particularly special set of skills possessed by MacKenzie Weegar.

All that said, I almost never notice him. His shifts pass entirely without incident, and before you know it, we’re 10 minutes through the second and I’m wondering if he’s even playing tonight.

Then I’ll see him have another normal shift, and that’ll be that.

I’m a fan, what can I say.

Absolutely. And it’s a good problem to have when we don’t have room for a guy like him on either powerplay right now.

Yup. He always told people that he was holding Doughty back offensively as well, and doughty had his best offensive year right after Sutter left.

Is he a shooter though? I see a guy that doesn't have that offensive timing to pick lanes and get pucks through. Holds on to the puck too long a lot of the time.

I like the player, he's been great, but I wonder on the offence overall.

He can shoot, especially on the rush, but he's a pass-first type of player. On the rush he has very good vision and playmaking ability, mostly in terms of springing guys on an odd-man rush.

Again, the hesitation you're seeing is because he's playing a very different system in Calgary and is still getting used to it. Normally he's very assertive when he goes on the attack.

You've seen him more than me.

But even when they've established possession in the offensive zone and he's on the point ... puck goes back and he holds holds holds and then shoots into a stick.

At that point there really isn't a change in system at play with possession established in the offensive zone.

Instincts or nerves.

He's a really special player, imo. And now after figuring out Sutter's system he is finding a new way to become an offensive D-man and it's starting to come together.

In year two I predict he'll easily be our best D-man. And if Sutter ever gives him first PP opportunity he'll easily be a threatening goal scorer.
