I tend to stick to the classics like Jenga, Scrabble, Careers, Yahtzee, Trivial Pursuit, Clue, checkers & chess, and Risk.
Relatively newer games that I've been turned on to and like include Oxford Dilemma and Settlers of Catan. I've never played any of the SoC expansions.
As for Monopoly, I'm still kicking myself for not picking up the Star Wars version I saw at a store a few years ago. However, of all the versions I've played I still enjoy the original Monopoly the most. So long as the time between plays is quite long (like, years) the game doesn't get too stale.
I forgot about this awesome thread. I have had a knack for wanting to get a couple of board games for the wife and I. Strategy oriented. I've had Agricola, Puerto Rico, and Dominion recommended to me. Some day I'm sure I will own them all but I'm torn on what to buy for now. I'm also not sure if I want something too overly complex and I've heard Puerto Rico can be overwhelming.
Oh and Ticket to Ride is a lot of fun, played it at a friend's get-together.
Meetup.com has a few different board game groups, I have gone to a few, not really my crowd though but you can try out games there before you buy. Also www.thedicetower.com is a great weekly podcast about board games, you can go through the archives on their reviews.

A dexterity game where nine plastic tree segments are stacked up. Each tree segment has four bark sections around it. On their turn, a player gets three taps with the axe to try and knock off pieces of bark from the tree segments for one point a piece. But be careful, if a tree segment comes down it's minus 5 points! A quick unique dexterity game.
Dare to discover Forbidden Island! Join a team of fearless adventurers on a do-or-die mission to capture four sacred treasures from the ruins of this perilous paradise. Your team will have to work together and make some pulse-pounding maneuvers, as the island will sink beneath every step! Race to collect the treasures and make a triumphant escape before you are swallowed into the watery abyss!
Does anyone like Betrayal at House on the Hill? I got it as recommended family game a few years ago but the rules are insanely complicated, then in all the scenarios we've played so far the traitor has unstoppable powers. We're not going to play it again. Anyone want it?
Also, weird bump. I was confused, thinking "I thought this was in the food and entertainment forum?"

I swear when this pandemic is over, I think I want to rent a small convention room and throw out an invitation here to do a game night (War game night) with liquor and stuff. Axis and Allies, or Twilight imperium or even some of the Star Wars table top games.
Though I think that a drunken game of clue would be a blast to.

Considering TI4 came out with an expansion right in the middle of Covid that I have only played once, and in an electronic setting, that would be the move.

I played Betrayal Legacy and that one I think the "heroes" won a fair bit. If the traitor isn't good at rules reading and self-enforcement though, they may end up with unstoppable powers.
Our family tradition is a new game from Santa. Ideally for 5+ adult players or a quick head to head match. Family favourites are Telestrations, Ticket to Ride, Cataan (but a bit on the long side), Anomia, Mexican Train, Goblet, Concept, Things, Balderdash, Hearts, Mancala.
I have elementary-school aged kids, we've been enjoying Trails. Reasonably priced, about 30 minutes long, one of those games where it can be fun because you don't really have a sense of whether your leading or lagging until the end, and the visuals on the cards are gorgeous. We like national parks and hiking, so it probably appeals more to us on that basis than someone who doesn't get excited about those activities.
