I wish he would have waited until the off-season. Even if it wasn't "better", so long as it was a different package for Dion, we'd be in a better situation. Sutter really did some significant damage to this organization in that 2-3 month span from the Dion trade until the end of the season.

It's the main reason why we are where we are today. Of everything the Stajan signing is the one that bothers me most.

Dion had struggled early because of season, but his last 20 games looked like the Dion of old.

Your posts are almost as well thought out as Netminder's.

Phanuef really did have a strong second half. The Leafs mid-season turnaround had a lot to do with him finally getting his game together. He looked like a real leader out there.

You can't say one trade isn't good because of a previous one, each trade has to be judged on its own merits.
and how can you complain about Babchuk leaving as a UFA when White would have been leaving as a UFA... even if you ignore those 2, Kostopoulos made a very solid impact on our team when Sutter is likely to not be much more than a marginal NHLer... plus this trade was when our team really started turning the corner

It's unfortunate that the Flames aren't in a position where they could have allowed him to re-enter the draft and then draft him again and say "What now, smart guy?".

After reading Duha's article about David Krejci in the G&M today and watching Krejci a lot on account of the B's run I am now optimistically hoping Horak turns into a Krejci-type player. I know it is a bit stupid to base player expectations shearly on other players of their nationality, but both these guys are Czech and are a similar size. They are both centers (although Hockey DB lists Horak as a LW) and their numbers are pretty similar for their Jr. years, especially if you factor in the higher scoring in the Q compared to the W.

I think he would have happily'ish signed with the Flames, he wanted to go to New York, that was all, it was an astute move by his agent, who no doubt started the conversation with him by asking 'do you care where you end up if you don't go to the Rangers?' once the kid said no then the plan was easy.
I doubt the Rangers had much more to do with it than getting word from the agent that his client would love to play for them and wasn't going to sign with Calgary (probably via the dad to avoid any tampering allegations).

It was actually a month before we really started turning the corner. We had a brutal December up until the 18th or so. It was a great trade though I just wish and still hope we're able to retain Babs to make it a better one.

maybe 'when' was the wrong word, but Babchuk and Kostopoulos were a big part of the team turning around

Sure, but who cares? We certainly don't need Kostopolous. The trade was a "win", but it was like putting a really nice shine on the silverware on the Titanic... In the end, White for a 2nd round pick would have been a lot more useful...

Well, it may have been out of Calgary's hands. One recurring suggestion has come up from scouts and front office sources with several teams -- the Rangers may have massaged the system to pry away Erixon on the cheap.

Glad it was finally suggested in the media that it was premeditated.

You know, I know, the Flames brass knows it was tampering but I think proving it is another matter. I look at it as the Smirkers, welcome to the big leagues Jay. Kind of like Clark's signing of Kesler to an offer sheet welcomed Nonis when he was up against the cap. Feaster got played, not that he had any control over the circumstances but I wonder if Darryl would have suffered the same fate. Not that I want Darryl back.

The good news here is that the burden of proof is not as strict as in a criminal court. No need to worry about "reasonable doubt", as I think the criteria would be *at worst* only as strict as you'd find in a civil case.
