This. Stickman clearly doesn't care so any attempt to reduce GHG emissions is moot

Oh well. At least inflation is under control and the carbon tax is no longer contributing to high inflation levels.

If China divides itself into 1,000,000 countries (with equal carbon emissions), is the problem solved?

It could be, and the worst part is that it’s a debate with actual merit. But when you’ve got a handful of posters who haven’t even bothered to know how the tax functions on a basic level (and a poster who doesn’t function on a basic level) it’s impossible to have an actual debate. Right now it’s literally just “this is why I hate it!” and “that’s not even how it works.” The complaints at least have to be based on a real function of the tax.

Canadians are better off without a carbon tax, and the world won't see a difference either way. It is a stupid idea and it needs to go.

My expenses have been reduced since the carbon tax. Since I understand how incentives work I bought an EV. I pay (when I charge at home) the equivalent of approximately 12 cents a litre for fuel. I am in the process of getting the interest free loan to green up my home to purchase solar panels. It will be for a 10 year term, 0 percent interest. It will be approximately 24K, so I will pay 200 dollars a month. 24K worth of solar panels will save me about 130 a month in electricity charges as of today. If one expects my electricity rate to go up by 5 percent a year over the ten year term, by year ten my monthly payments will be approximately the same as my loan payments. 15 months after I pay off my loan I will be even in terms of cost and will just save the equivalent of my electricity bill for the remaining life of the panels. And I will collect my carbon tax rebate each year as a little side money.

Who is paying for you to get your interest free loan? How much has that carbon tax rebate cost you vs how much are you getting back in return? Ie how much have you paid in buried carbon tax from things you buy every day?
It is all coming from the left pocket, the government processes these things for a cost, then you get a portion of the remainder in the right pocket in different forms.

4) Trudeau....
Ya that is all so conservative, not blatantly obvious common sense. Good argument.
|
Hmm. You seem to think that China operates in some kind of a vacuum. Why in your opinion could China be the biggest emitter? Does it have anything to do with it being the manufacturing hub for nearly every consumer product in the world?
A tax that changes your behaviour, maybe makes you reconsider buying some Dollarama and Walmart junky trinkets is a good start.

Guys,
In 2018-2019 the federal and provincial expenditures were $795,217,209,100. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List...l_expenditures
In 2020-2021 the governments took in over $4.2 billion (of which nearly $4.1 billion was returned). https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manit...ario-1.6395158
Assuming same level of expenditures across the board in 2020-2021. Then the carbon tax collected about 0.5% of total expenditures of Canadian federal and provincial governments.
A number so small why are we bothering to talk about it? Governments collect way more on income taxes, and sales taxes!

Also in Alberta where many complain about it it is rebated (used to be a year in advance) and is coming up on OCt 15

I really wish you guys would stop engaging with Stickman. He is not an honest actor trying to have a real conversation. He is an agent of propaganda, who is only interested in parroting right-wing talking points. These trolls thrive on the fake debates where they ignore counter-arguments, and use this platform as an excuse to spew lies.
Please don't engage with him. There are plenty of other people who are right-leaning that are honestly interested in the discussion and learning about the issue. Stickman isn't one of them.

I received a newsletter from my MP, Len Webber, today with results from his weird little survey. Normally, I ignore the results because it's clearly not representative. But today he published that half of people want the government to focus LESS on indigenous reconciliation without any comment at all. On the national day of truth and reconciliation, Len Webber thought it was a good idea to tell his constituents that he has been told to focus on reconciliation less. What the hell, Len?
