Wrong. The scouting staff should be well connected enough to know what the read of every player is from around the League. In other words, even if the Flames loved Brodie and thought he would be one of the best picks outside of the first round, they also very likely had a good sense on where other teams projected him.
Check out some of the interviews with Tod Button from this past summer about how they approached the Gaudreau pick. The scouts pick players that they think will be the best players, but they also strategically do so in order to maximise the value of their picks.
Brodie was a terrific draft pick, and Sutter, Button and his scouts deserve all the credit in the world.

Wonder what the concerns were...

In 2008 there was still a lot of lingering uncertainty about the long term viability of smaller players, especially defensemen. Duncan Keith was just emerging and Erik Karlsson had been drafted only the previous day. I think there was likely still questions about how effective some of these guys would be in the NHL; questions that have largely since been answered.

Tom Webster was really really high on Brodie and definitely ranked him above the fourth round - he fought tooth and nail for the Flames to take him in the fourth and instead of risk losing him later. Any draft has a strategic component especially after the first couple rounds...you don't necessarily use a pick on guy when YOU think he should be taken if you think others rate him lower.

How could that possibly be?
So many people on here made it very clear that there is no Gio cap and the salary TJ will be paid in the first year of his contract will exceed Gio's salary next year.
Looks like the Flames obviously don't know what they are doing when it comes to TJ's new contract.

Just because Brodie's deal is structured this way, that does not confirm that there is a team-mandated cap to keep salaries under Giordano's ... and Wideman's.

Of course... you're right...its probably just an accident or a coincidence that his first year happens to below what Gio is getting paid..

Flames must have something to do with me getting paid less than Giordano next season as well. Couldn't be a coincidence!
I would also like to add: It would be a foolish for a bottom dweller like Calgary to have an internal $4 million dollar cap. Not only is that ridiculous number which is pretty low, it also sends a pretty ugly message that no matter what you do and how good you do it, you won't get paid more than $4 million? On a team like Calgary who already has a small problem attracting free agents? That makes zero sense.

This is fantastic for both Brodie and the Flames. Brodie over the past 2 years has made big chunks of improvement each season. A well deserved jump in salary. Great term and cap hit.
So far this season Brodie is controlling the pace of the game as well as Gio has, what a great match for Gio he is they have built solid chemistry.
