It's just negotiations between a GM and a players Agent, it's not like we're at the start of the year and the player is holding out... a good GM will try to get value wherever they can, a good Agent will try to get extraneous value wherever they can. I'd rather have the discussions and negotiations to pay due diligence to such critical contracts. After the WC it's going to be around $7.5-$7.75 and both parties will be happy.
@Gaudreauvertime - Why is it foolish? I'm sorry but I don't think either party is being foolish and it's just standard negotiations; it's a significantly major contract for Treliving, Gross and Gaudreau. There is zero rush to get it done right now yet, talk to me at the start of the year if he hasn't signed yet and I'll be a bit more on your side because that's when I think it's getting foolish. At this point in time it's not hurting anything.

I believe Treliving is learning a hard lesson in regards to giving Giordano that big contract a year earlier than he had to. 12 months later a lot of things have changed and I simply don't know how he's going to be able to work around that 6 year deal when in a few years we are revisiting this scenario with the Bennett, Tkachuk, and any other Flames prospects that meet or exceed expectations going into RFA negotiations. Johnny's contract situation is a lot more difficult than the average fan realizes as Treliving is trying to balance things so he's not restricted in being able to retain future RFA's.

I don't care what the market value supposedly is. The amount of money we pay athletes to play kid's games is ridiculous. I hope the Flames stand their ground and move him if they can't get a reasonable deal. All of you who are prepared to spend the bank will be bitching big time if he doesn't live up to your expectations.

How can you say who is being foolish without actually knowing who had offered what and why and what the responses from both parties have been

Oh you like that one?
It's like the guy that only gets news from Fox or CNN thinking the world agrees with them.
Sorry but that article was silly. An article suggesting the Flames play hard ball and sign him for 6.5M would be equally as silly.
With the exchange rate at 1.305 and some serious concern about the cap not moving for the next few years now is not the time to gamble on a bigger dollar amount and term on a player that has 5 RFA years ahead of him.
And to use the game last night as fodder? A second assist and a broken play bank goal give the guy two points but he was hardly dominant. And I'm a fan!

$8x8 wouldnt be a terrible deal, but it wouldnt be ideal either. Get that dollar number down as far as possible and the deal gets better and better.
Pretty standard boilerplate stuff.

$8M makes him the third highest LW (tied with Tarasenko) and 6th highest winger. Other than Kessel, everyone ahead of him is pretty justifiable - but they are all pure UFAs and were when they signed, I think.

Yes.
That is a really silly article. Ken Campbell might live in a fantasy world in which every player and every NHL player contract negotiation is subject to identical forces. We may all agree that players should be payed according to what they are expected to do in the future, and not on the basis of what they have done in the past, but this is just simply not the way the NHL works, and it is not because of some obsolete form of "old-school thinking." It is because of the way the CURRENT CBA is structured, and it is because restricted free agents without League-wide negotiating rights will always be less expensive to sign than unrestricted free agents. It is because RFAs with arbitration rights will always be more expensive than RFAs without. It is because RFAs who are five years removed from unrestricted free agency will always be less expensive than players who are only two, three, or four years removed.
Johnny Gaudreau's production might be worth $8.0 m today, and is probably worth that much in the near future. But because of all these other crucial factors that continue to have a dramatic effect on a player's cost he will never reach that value on his second contract. It just won't happen.

Any talk of paying Gaudreau what star UFAs are getting is pointless - it won't happen.
Treliving simply won't go there, and nor should he.
Something in the range of 8 x $6.75 - $7.25M would make him one of the highest paid RFAs in the NHL, despite the fact that he still has 5 RFA years remaining.
Anyone that thinks he should be paid more than that is crazy.

HF has fully transitioned to trade proposals and baseless speculation Johnny wants out. This is an agent trying make a name for himself but at the end of the day the deal will get done. The Flames paid Monahan big money and bought 3 UFA years. They paid Dougie and bought 2 UFA years. If Johnny wants to be paid he needs to sign at least 7 years. If he wants to be paid over $7Mm he needs to sign 8 years

I think any deal that comes in with a cap hit over $7.5 is pretty bad.

If Gaudreau was pushing for a bridge compared to long term as reported would it take this long?
Personally if I were Gaudreau I'd push for a 2-3 year bridge if I was wanting to maximize earnings. Doesn't appear that is his main concern at least.

He has maintained from the very beginning that he wants to play in Calgary. I continue to believe this is a very high priority for him.

No I know hence the second part there. Was just curious what Calgary's feelings to a bridge deal would be.

I doubt it would have taken this long. I think both sides want long term.

So Johnny and the Flames are 1.5 million apart (Eric Francis)?
I'm guessing the Flames are at 6.9 million, and Johnny is at 8.4 million.
