curious, didn't expect necessarily to get both guys, and if I did I assumed I would have a few injuries by now. still they add some veteran depth to the 4th line. Yelle seems to be contributing in Boston so hopefully at his new reduced contract he can be a useful CPHLer for a few more years

I think the league should look at a rule where bought out playes after say the 1st of March can only sign one year deals at the end of the year and than go back into the Free agency pool in the summer. A guy like Yelle who's still kind of useful goes for pretty much nothing. In the summer he likely gets a more lucrative deal when more teams would be looking at having cap space to add players.

What's to stop lower end teams from making offers now and locking those players up on the cheap for more than 1 year?

If anything I think its a huge opportunity for bottom feeders to get some better players - a guy like Bonk could have easily been signed by a team out of the playoffs.

Nothing...

I just thought this was a better option for the actual players. Get released, and they get a chance to latch on with a playoff team AND than an oppurtunity to sign with all teams in the summer where they could get better deals.

I would argue that if lower end teams save cap for this type of thing at the end of the year it will cause even less trading than there already is as everyone will look for free agent releases and try to sign these types of players.

Yeah and I understand that but it seems like an unneeded complexity. The type of guys that are being picked up now weren't really signing for much more dough in the off-season.

My bigger question mark was whether we should allow players released this year to sign with any teams at all, even for one year. I think it lowers the value of rentals at the deadline if playoff teams know they can sit in the weeds and just wait for some overpaid, but still useful players to be released.

So my thought process for next year was to just make these guys sit on the sidelines until the off-season.

That would be fine with me too. This would probably increase trading as a trade would be the only way to get a guy like that at the end of the season. In all honesty it would probably be a better way to go.

I like that teams have to make their buyouts at a time that they have to comply with the cap so nobody gets off scott free for buying out a bad contract. But it does put a few guys into the free agent pool at the end of the year who used to get bought out when the watchdog isn't in effect and become summer free agents.

I completely agree with this. If a player gets released after the trade deadline, he shouldn't be available until after July 1st
