"The Chad" Frikken Johnson
I did a search for this thread, and horror of horrors it didn't exist! This is untenable! The Chad is a large part of this season's turn around, and his current numbers are top of the league.
Since the 1-0 win in Minnesota Nov 15, Chad Johnson is:
1st in wins (11),
1st in Sv% (.946%),
2nd in GAA (1.61, Raanta has 1.58)
1st in shutouts (3)
Season wise:
18 GP - record : 13-4-1
GAA: 1.98
SV%: .932
Those are numbers that make him a part of the Vezina conversation imo. Especially if he can continue this and sustain these stats. Historiucally he's been rock solid too so there is no reason to believe this is an anomoly.
The Chad is for real, and deserves a Frikken.

I predicted at the start of the season Johnson would likely be our #1 goalie. He's used to playing for a bad defensive team (Buffalo). It's a bit of culture shock for Elliott right now. They're both good goalies. I don't see eliteness in Johnson's game yet. His positional play has been excellent and given his size that is very important. Flames are giving up some point blank shots, but so is the other team.
I think the Flames are playing the game correctly now. Before, they used to come out slowly and fall behind early. They now play a defensive game in the 1st period to get into the game, they then start turning it on in the 2nd period offensively a bit more. Good on them!

Said it in the last PGT, Johnson reminds me of Craig Anderson.
Slow developing goalie without the pedigree of being a high draft pick who in his late 20's seems to have taken the step to legit NHL starter, but because of his age/pedigree it's taking longer for people to accept him as anything more than just a decent back up.

Great story too that he's a home town kid.
Must be nice to have a GM address goaltending.

Maybe Gaudreauvertime was just smarter than us all.

There are some outstanding responses in that thread. I get where most come from, but outstanding nonetheless.

Yeah, this can't be emphasized enough. We're mostly die hard fanatics here on CP when you consider how much time we devote to discussing the Flames... It's essentially if one of us became the starting goalie for our favorite team. Guy must be so happy with how things have gone so far.

Johnson not mentioned in three stars of the week yet again....
What does he have to do to get a recognition??

Play in the east?
I mean Gaudreau probably should of been 3rd star ahead of Gagner, let alone Johnson.

I'm perfectly content to let Johnson fly under the radar. Even though he's extensively scouted by other teams scouts and I'm sure the players know who he is, I'm fine with their fans and the NHL in general continuing to think that he is some nobody and assuming he'll get lit up for goals.
It makes the salt in the ATL reports that much sweeter.

Part of his game reminds me of Noodles back in 03/04 right before he went down with the injury. Kipper then took over and the rest was history

Good Guy Chad Johnson
Quote:
To celebrate his first goose-egg in Flames silks, the 30-year-old goalie soon after showed up at the rink with a bottle of wine for each of his defencemen.
Two more shutouts later, every member of his skating staff — and some of the supporting cast, too — have enjoyed a few gulps of gratitude.
“It’s just something I wanted to do to say a little thank-you to the team,” Johnson said.
|
Quote:
There are five guys in front of us, helping you defend, doing things, and they can make it harder on you or easier.
“So shutouts are really a team thing. The goalie obviously gets recognition for that, but I’ve always felt I wanted to do something to kind of say thank-you to all the guys. I gave it to the D the first time and the forwards kind of complained that they didn’t get it. I was going to give it to the forwards the second time, which I did. Then back to D the third.
“Hopefully the wine was nice enough that they’ll keep playing hard in front of me.”
