Could Johnson be the starter by the end of the year?
Unrelated to Elliott's performance last night, does anyone else think Johnson could end up the starter by the end of the year? He was fantastic last year on a pretty poor Buffalo team, going 22-16-4 with a .920 save percentage and 2.36 GAA. And it's not like those numbers are outliers, his career numbers are 50-30-11 with a .917 save percentage and 2.39 GAA. I find him to be pretty underrated.
Compare that to Elliott's .914 career save percentage and 2.41 GAA, despite playing a large chunk of his career behind a structured defense in St Louis. Outside of St Louis, his career numbers are awful, going 61-53-16 with a .901 save percentage and 2.90 GAA. I know he's been heavily touted as the answer to our problems in net, but I just don't see it. He's not great positionally, he's not the most athletic guy, and he doesn't display great hockey sense.
Yes, he was great in St Louis behind Hitchcock's system, but haven't a lot of goalies had career years with Hitchcock?
I really think we'll end up seeing Johnson steal the starting job. Thoughts?
stop. Please. The sky isn't falling, it was a bad game by the team. This isl like asking if Johnny should be onthe 4th line and Bouma should be on the first by the end of the year.
Relax.

I'd like to see you give Elliot a little more of a look as the Flames goaltender before starting a thread like this. Nobody played very well last night. Elliot included.
Also, did you see Chad Johnson's last game in the preseason?

Way too early to be talking this crap. Been so long since winning a season opener. This loss is on the whole team and you can count the refs in on this one
Did you guys read where I said this is not at all about last night and then where I laid out the statistics to support that?
Johnson has better career numbers than Elliott despite not having the advantage of playing half his career in a Hitchcock system. Elliott's numbers outside of that system are terrible. That doesn't concern anybody?

Not about last night? BS.
If Elliott gets a shutout last night, do you create this thread? If your answer is anything but no, you are kidding yourself.

This is the last reply to you before I put you on ignore because clearly you just like to stir the pot.
Could Johnson be the starter by the end of the year? Sure. Elloitt could be hurt, or maybe the Flames have a bad year and trade Elliott at the dealine, and maybe even Elliott doesn't play well and loses his job.
However this is a horrible thread to start after 1 game, especially since you are talking about a 30 year old goalie who has started 88 games in his career and is regarded by many in the league as a good back up, vs a 31 year old guy who has started 295 games in his career and is seen by many as a very good starting goalie.
I don't see you starting a thread asking where the production was from Gaudreau last night. You will be hard pressed to win games when your top line doesn't score.
Don't bother replying to me, I won't see it.

Johnson had some good numbers the previous seasons as well as Elliott. However playing for the Flames is not same as St Louis or Buffalo. It's only one game so we don't need to panic yet.

Well,
Steve Mason Hitchcock .908
Steve Mason Post-Hitchock .912
Ryan Miller Buffalo .916 Ryan Miller STL .903 Ryan Miller Van .914
Yaroslav Halak MTL .919 Yaroslav Halak STL .916
Yaroslav Halak WAS .930
Yaroslav Halak NYI .916
Crazy how all these good goalies failed to outperform both Elliott and their own percentages outside of Hitchcock's system... in "Hitchcock's system" (which is what exactly? The same system 75% of the league uses with a bit more wussy neutral zone trapping when they have a lead)
