Apparently, it was always the plan. True North wanted their AHL team to be closer to Winnipeg. Currently, Danny Williams is working with True North to lure a replacement team to Newfoundland, while Thunder Bay constructs their new arena.

But the most important questions remains unanswered: will they keep that horrible name?

There is only one logical name for the new team.
Thunder Bay Lightning.

Weird. I always thought that the Jets were Winnipeg's AHL team.

This has been in the works for a long time. Happy it's official but the new event centre needs to be built first and I'm sure something will come up to screw up those plans. One person won't like the layout of something and it'll all get canceled lol.
On a side note, I wonder how long it'll be before Thunder Bay's team is better than the jets

Don't hold your breath.
According to Winnipeg poster Jets4Life, with Paul Maurice now behind the bench, the Jets are an elite level NHL team:

This is exciting news! As a proud Thunder Bayan I know many back home will support this move by attending games. No doubt.
The only question left to answer is - how badly will Shelbyville screw it up?

So now no matter where you are in the Jets organization, you are freezing your nuts off.
Shiver...

What makes a move to Thunder Bay any more tangible for the Jets long term stability than Winnipeg? Oh wait...

It's not a bad idea, actually. Winnipeg will seem like paradise compared to Thunder Bay.

ouch... Actually, Winnipeg is usually colder than Thunder Bay. Winnipeg has a lot more to offer because it's a lot bigger but it's still a pretty horrible place to live. Thunder Bay will support the hockey when it moves there but as soon as the novelty wears off and the team doesn't play well it'll be a bad situation.

Agreed Poe...I'm not all that familiar with the Jets farm team, or what their record is - but Thunder Bay will need to see a competitive team night in, night out in order to continue filling the stands - otherwise it'll be just like the Whiskeyjacks (AAA Baseball team) all over again.

Years ago Thunder Bay had a semi-pro hockey team there and it changed names a few times before leaving. It went from the twins, Thunder-Hawks, and then Thunder-Cats (and I was the mascot for the last season). It's hard to say what will happen because a lot of people were upset that the team left and tried to get it back so hopefully they're still around and will support a team.

I used to live there back in those days.
Don't get me wrong, I like Thunder Bay enough for a small city, but I can't see the AHL doing well there. I spent a couple of weeks there this past summer and in the 14-15 years since I left, nothing changed. If anything, it seemed less busy and more run down in areas. If they couldn't support the UHL back then, I don't see them supporting the AHL now.
Fortunately, they will have a rich owner though.

Pretty much.
Having lived in both, I would actually take Thunder Bay though. Slightly better weather and more natural beauty.

In fairness, the UHL was a low-level league. And referencing the other poster, the Whiskey Jacks weren't AAA baseball. They were indy league baseball. If anything will succeed in Thunder Bay, it will be the AHL, which is unquestionably the highest level of hockey the city will ever see. There are no guarantees, of course, as minor league teams tend to be nomadic for a reason. Support can often be fleeting.

As an Ice Caps season ticket holder, this bites.
The stadium has been sold out for EVERY game (~6200 seats) since the team was established and demand for tickets is ridiculous. I can usually sell my tickets for ~25% more than face value when I don't use them. I can understand why the Jets organization wants to make the move, but this certainly is a kick in the nuts to the current fan base.
I really hope the AHL recognizes that there's a strong market for AHL hockey in St. John's and gets a team here as soon as the Jets are gone.
