Default Does your place of employment support United Way?

It's a pretty big deal at mine. They want to get donations from people, but also particpation in community projects and volunteering. All I ever do is pledge an amount per payday to be deducted as my donation.

They aren't at mine since they added left-wing political advocacy to their public profile.

Don't know how you can say that. I generally don't support them because they've been known to contribute to pro-life groups.

Yes, my employer tries to get us involved, but I only contributed once. I heard that they have a lot of overhead costs and a lot of the donations go to that.

Yeah, most United Ways used to be borderline for efficiency, just clearing the 80% mark - in other words, 20% of contributions were used for overhead.

I think this has gotten better recently.

I would pay $500 to have my dress code knocked down a peg.

If we could come to work and wear nothing but boxers and a t-shirt, they could generate a lot of donations.

I work for city government and United Way is the only charity that makes a presentation at our shop. I've always found that odd.

We're required to turn in our donation sheet even if we don't pledge any money, to prove that we were made aware of the option.

Nonprofits run into the same issue as politicians when it comes to pay. If you want to attract intelligent people who will be able to utilize the donations that come in you have to pay a competitive salary. Sort of the same as government, if you don't pay enough you won't get quality candidates. Do you really want some person making $30,000 a year in charge of a $50 million budget?

I used to be leery about donating for a lot of the overhead and "bang for the buck" kind of comemnts made. I guess two things swated me: 1) You can target the donation to a charity or need of your choice. 2) The company matches every contribution, dollar for dollar.

i understand you cant have some bozo who doesnt have any knowledge come in and allocate this money, but i know before the rate of pay was quite excessive..... and for a charity allocating money to needy causes that need it, it is hard to take... just out of curiousity, what does the big shots at United Way currently make?

Yes, do explain please. I may double my contribution.

I work for the federal government and our payroll deduction plan has 3 boxes:

A) United Way
B) Health Partners (which is an amalgamated group of medical charities - Lung association, Cancer societies, etc)
C) Other

To fill in "Other" you need to track down the organizations charitable donations number.

And, yes, the United Way is pushed as the #1 choice as it gets top billing. But my section C is much busier than the rest of the form (Amnest, PIRG).
