Default Another devastaing quake in Japan

This time in the South, right in my neck of the woods, about 100kms south of where I am to be more exact.

2 big quakes, the first on Thursday evening which was magnitude 6 (considered a 'big one') followed by another even bigger one Saturday early morning (around 1:30am) which had a magnitude of over 7; a number that has not been seen since the Tohoku quake/tsunami of 2011. In between the two big quakes and since the last one a series of almost constant aftershocks.

The odd thing about this one is the location. Kyushu is not as 'well known' for disastrous quakes like the Kansai or Tohoku regions of Honshu. The other oddity is two massive quakes on 2 consecutive nights.

The two quakes were level 4 and 5 here in Fukuoka respectively. Only casualties in my place were glasses, plates and picture frames smashed on the floor. What has been more surreal in my opinion have been the aftershocks; it literally felt all day Saturday like our building would not stop shaking, often subtle but moving none the less (like we were floating on calm water).

37 confirmed dead, over 1000 injured and over 90,000 under evacuation.

Kumamoto Castle severely damaged. Landslides have cause roads and railroads to be impassable.
Friday morning:

Saturday morning:

Media coverage:

NHK Japan (English)
http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20160416_24/

BBC:
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-36059487

And so goes life in Japan really, just not this part of Japan so much historically.

Japan would almost need to completely sink to cause a tsunami evacuation all the way down to Costa Rica.

We had a small tsunami event in CR the last big Japanese earthquake. No flooding, but noticeable and changed the shape of some of the beaches. I also live in a coastal town and too am always mentally prepared for one.

On a separate note, a 7.8 just hit Ecuador.

Hope you`re doing OK Scrambler. I know the earthquake warnings have been popping up on the TV every 20 mins or so. It must really feel like the shaking hasn`t stopped. Unreal.

Hang in there!

If I was over on the central coast I would have invited you out for a beer. Unless of course you are in Santa Teresa this weekend!? Enjoy the new southern pulse tomorrow.

Main difference between 2011 and this one is that the big M9 in 2011 was IN the ocean on the Pacific side. This one happened in the middle of Kyushu Island; if there was any risk of tsunami it would have been from the Ariake Sea/Sea of Japan side.

Thanks fanman, nothing but broken plates, glasses and picture frames here in our home, nothing to cry about. But I feel real bad for the people in Kumamoto and Oita, going to get some supplies (rice, toilet paper, diapers, instant noodles) tomorrow to send to the evac areas via Fukuoka City Hall.

I feel so lucky in Calgary. We live in a pretty safe part of the world when it comes to natural disasters.

I like the fact that my floors don't shake and things don't fall off our walls on a regular basis.

I hope that you and your friends/family are safe Scrambler.
