Eat your vegetables. I knew a guy who developed such bad eating habits when he moved out for the first time that he pretty much gave himself scurvy and had to be medicated.

Make sure you have some first aide basics around the house.
I found this one out the hard way and had to run to the pharmacy with toilet paper duct taped to a rather large gash on my finger after a knife washing incident.

The one thing that didn't even cross my mind until it was too late: shower curtain.

Yeah a well balanced diet is a big thing. At least pop a few multivitamins.
First year I was out on my own, I stopped eating breakfast - and it really gets to you, you'll gain weight and start feeling awful.
You should be respectful of your neighboors - especially in an apartment setting, try to find a good volume where they won't complain on you in the middle of the night. It can be a good way to get kicked out of your building, really fast.
A plunger + toilet brush (make sure you get these right away), oven mits and dish cloths.

Immediate priority? Eating, bathing, and sleeping.
Sheets to cover some manner of sleeping pad.
Towel and soap for ablutions, toothbrush for hygene. Comb if feeling fancy.
Dishes, cutlery, condiments. Dish soap.
I always forgot about the little things whenever I moved anywhere.

Buy a whole bunch of cleaning supplies in one big purchase, and that should last you awhile. They can be a pain if you have to keep going back to the store to get something you didn't get the first time, like mould remover or stain remover.

Go easy on the plates, bowls, dishes, cutlery ect. 3 or 4 of everything is much easier to manage and dishes wont pile up so fast. Especially living alone or with a room mate keep things like doing the dishes and cleaning a regular weekly thing then the work doenst pile up or you find yourself scrambling last minute to tidy when guests ae coming. Anything extra keep packed away if you dont really need it at the time.

I would say if you're getting new furniture anyway, get a pull-out or futon couch. I never have a decent place for my friends to crash and I feel like an ass...
But on that note you can get furniture second hand for way way way cheaper( even cheaper than Ikea). I don't think I have a single item of main-furniture in my house that I bought new when I moved.
Grandparents places can be a gold-mine.
If your moving out soon get a fan...
plunger is key... you won't have time to run and get one when you need it.

if you don't already have it, start a tool kit. Start with a multi-headed screwdriver, a pair of pliers, and a hammer.

Good one...if you can score a leatherman-type tool, they are worth their weight in gold.

Lightbulbs. I got caught without any. When they burnt out, it was terrible trying to work by candlelight. Maybe a flashlight or something would be a good idea too.

Make sure your new place has a high speed net connection setup, by the time you move in.

Ah, good one. Call and book an appointment as far in advance as you can. Last year when I moved in to my new place, I called at the end of the summer and I had to wait almost a month before they could set up cable/internet just because they had so many places to go set up because of all the university students moving in. It was a loooong month, let me tell you. But that was in Victoria, and pretty much everything is friggin' slow there.
