Icon48 Collapsing Russian Ruble reducing the threat of the KHL?

James Mirtle @mirtle
Tough times in Russia and the KHL. The ruble is tanking hard right now, to an exceptionally low number.

James Mirtle @mirtle
Players are paid in rubles over there, so they've lost roughly 35% of the value of their contracts already. This threatens KHL in a big way.

James Mirtle @mirtle
One agent on the KHL situation right now: "I don't think we'll see too many NHL level players playing there."

James Mirtle @mirtle
The only reason a lot of these players are going to the KHL is the money. If that's suddenly in doubt, they won't go.

Thread title begs the question. The KHL has never really been a threat.

Wow, proper use of the phrase "begs the question". That deserves a quote and thanks!

The phrase should be followed by a question.

So now, half the general managers in the KHL would trade their roster for Oilers' roster right?

Not to derail, and at the risk of sounding nerdy, the phrase "begs the question" doesn't need to be followed by a question. It simply means "the statement is built on a faulty or assumed premise".

Saying that the title "begs the question" just means that it assumed that the KHL was a threat, which is not an established fact.

From wikipedia:
Quote:
Many English speakers use "begs the question" to mean "raises the question", "evades the question", or even "ignores the question", and follow that phrase with the question, for example: "I am 120kg and have severely clogged arteries, which begs the question: why have I not started exercising?"

In philosophical, logical, grammatical, and legal contexts, some commenters deem such usage to be mistaken or at best unclear.

I'm far more worried about the effect of the tanking Canadian dollar on the NHL than the tanking Ruble

Boyd #7 overall in pts and Nigel Dawes #13.

Radulov, Kovalchuk, Sobotka (27 yr old RFA) from the Blues are NHL level.

Burmistrov 23 year old Jets RFA has not put up the numbers in the KHL but looked to be a great NHL prospect (playing top-6) until he got in Coach Noel's doghouse.

Linus Omark has 34 pts in 35 games. The Oilers should make a.......oh wait, never mind.

Are all players in the league paid in rubles or just the Russian-based teams? Could this turn the Helsinkis of the KHL into powerhouses?

Right!

Snakeye's proper usage of the phrase was the first thing that caught my eye, too. So rare!

As for the topic, I too agree that the thread title begs the question. Nobody wants to live in Russia. Ever.
