I never knew that it was a two piece trophy in the 50's.
The Cup's bands had different widths during the 50s, kinda like patch work and had a removable cup. The stovepipe Cup of the 30s & 40s also had a removable cup.

It also seems like in the 1990s, it became a lot more tame. Before that, it was like a big scrum with the Cup in the middle, and now it is basically a presentation with the other players staying back. The old way looked a lot more fun. It probably didn't offer as many individual photo-ops though.

My favourite's have to be the ones where the players emotions just completely overtake them, i.e. Chara's in 2011, Messier in 1994 and Lanny in 1989. They are all just shaking with joy, it's so awesome to see.

Cool. Interesting that Gretzky in 1984 was the first to hold the cup portion. Every year followed was the same.
I agree, I thought that was strange. I also thought it was strange that the islanders where holding the cup at the bottom, upright while skating around the ice. Very interesting.
