Not to defend the US because they most definitely played a huge part, it was not a "US led coup". I'd frame it more as a US sanctioned coup.

The US actually did attempt a coup in 1970, but that was to force a re-election (through bribes and backroom dealings) and hope Chileans vote for a less socialist leader.
Since that didn't work they went to plan B which was to create a bunch of unrest through economics and propaganda to "set the stage" and hope one happens.
