Default X-mas Dinner - eating out

So this year due to several family members traveling etc... it's just me and my mom on X-mas day. It would excessive and unnecessary to do a turkey dinner with all the fixings. So we are thinking of just going to see the hobbit (she loved the ring's trilogy) and then eating out afterwards.

Any suggestions for a nice - i.e. not a buffet - dinner on X-mas day? I am assuming 90% of places are closed let alone have their best cooking staff on hand so the idea may not be practical...

Hotel. Call ahead and make a reservation for dinner, they'll do a nice Christmas spread for sure, proportionate to how nice the hotel is. If you can see the movie at Eau Claire downtown, go the Sheraton or Hyatt or somewhere nice.

I'll figured most hotels would be buffet and Chinese food is not really my idea of a nice dinner... I was thinking like a 5-7 course meal... kind of thing. As I said may not be realistic... I guess I could call some hotels and see what they are offering.

Last year it was Mr. Sub on Christmas Day. Not saying that's where you should take your mom, unless she likes the classier joints, in which case I can recommend the pizza sub.

I was in a hotel last year, (not in calgary) and they had a set dinner for christmas day, no buffet or anything. You should at least call around, it's a good time for hotels to step up and do something for most of the guests. I wouldn't be surprised if the higher end places did do a pretty nice set dinner... (and then completely overcharge you for it)

Does Christmas Eve work? Carriage House Inn has a 3-course Christmas Eve dinner.

Just a buffet on the 25th though.

Also, if you're still interested in cooking, but just don't want the excess of a 13 pound bird, you could always go with Cornish Game Hens.

That little tidbit was suggested by the wonderful CP braintrust in this thread:

A few years ago my parents were in town for Christmas. Instead of making a big dinner for only four people, we decided to do what you're doing. We ended up getting a reservation at the Sheraton Eau Claire. It was not buffet-style (aside from the dessert bar). You could order from I think 3-4 different meals, one of which was a traditional turkey dinner with stuffing, cranberry, mashed potatoes, etc.

or buy a prebaked chicken from coop and stick some stuffing into it and pretend it's just a mini turkey. two baked potatoes, a bag of premixed salad, can of cranberry sauce and some frozen steamed veg.

pow faux christmas dinner. Also suitable for thanksgiving, american thanksgiving, easter and any evening you need a gag homemade dinner date.

5 to 7 courses? Dunno if any of these places are open, but you could try 'em.
