Yeah, I really think Gaudreau went too high. He's maybe 6th or 7th for me.

Vernon's number is hanging in the rafters. All that needs to be said.

A few spots too high for sure. Hull, Fleury and Vernon would have been ahead of him in my books.

Definitely some recency bias.

Totally fair, but Hull is #5 all time in goals scored in the history of the game. I know he didn't do that in Calgary. If the Calgary angle is weighted high in a persons criteria, then Vernon should be there. I, personally, don't have any weight on whether the player was prolific on the Flames.

I said before that all of Gaudreau's achievements were bettered by Kent Nilsson (who was, until Lanny got to Calgary, a "face" as well).

Hull is like Fox. Great picks, but the Flames received very little value in return which negated them being great picks IMO.

Would be like considering Savard or St. Louis on a Flames all star team.

Kent Nilsson had some great seasons but was also unpopular and had worn out his welcome before Lanny arrived. His buzz was short lived compared to Gaudreau and little kids weren't skating in his jersey at the neighborhood rink they way they did for Gaudreau. He was traded for two seconds (Calgary had to throw in a third).
There is some sentimentality around Johnny and deservedly so. Johnny was also never quite the face of the franchise the way Lanny, Iginla and Fleury were. But I'd say there is a gap between him and Nilsson in that regard.

Achievement-wise Nilsson is way above. And he wasn't that unpopular - that's a bit of a myth - more like he wasn't driven like some other guys and he was ineffective in POs despite being PPG in them(a little like the accusations against Gaudreau) when he was dipping to 70 points. Nilsson won the league scoring his first year here - he was the star of the team. He set a franchise record that first year that's never been beaten. And wearing player jerseys weren't really a big thing back then.
Yes, he was traded for a couple seconds, one of which was Newy, and then he was still PPG after that. It was an unpopular trade, and one of many panicky ones the Flames have made in their time.

Not to me it doesn't.
The draft pick is graded.
The asset management is graded.
Fox wouldn't sign in Calgary, so they included him in a deal that actually still continues to bear fruit. But great draft pick.
Hull was moved for two vets that cemented a Stanley Cup. But great pick.
