Default Ben Johnson - 25 years ago today!

I know Sportsnet has been doing features with him going back to the stadium.

I watched it in a pub in London, Ontario with a bunch of Western students. We all went nuts and sang Oh Canada. The following weekend, there was a big house party called "Thanks A Bunch Ben Johnson". Oh, how we turned on him.

6 of the 8 sprinters in that final were caught doping at some point. That whole era of sprinting is pretty much the equivalent of baseball a few years ago.

The 30 For 30 about Johnson and Lewis was pretty great.

Well the real difference was 0.13 seconds, but otherwise ya.

I love how Lewis still denies doping. Its like the whole Lance Armstrong thing. At the elite level of athletics if everyone else is doping and you win, it is almost certain that you are doping too.

That whole era? More like sprinting since is the equivalent of baseball a few years ago and now.

Look at the size and definition of the present sprinters now vs. that video clip from the 80s. Yes, I know training has improved, but these were world class athletes in the late 80s/early 90s.

Most upper end athletics, of any kind, have become a contest about how well your body reacts to performance enhancing drugs.

That 30 in 30 was cool when they asked the guy Johnson accused of sabotaging his sample.

"Maybe I did, maybe I didn't, but that was a long time ago" Not exactly a resounding denial.

Sounds like while he was doping, it wasn't the doping that caught him but the friend of Lewis that spiked his post race drink.

Yup!

9.78 Tim Montgomery September 14, 2002 in Paris. (but wind aided)
9.77 Asafa Powell June 14 2005 in Athens

Ben Johnson's record stood for 17 years.

An excellent read on that race in particular and the culture of doping at that time in general:

Sorry to sound like a broken record here..but:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/athletics/23307913

Tyson Gay, US record holder and former US champion, and Osafa Powell both recently busted.

In fact, all but 2 of the top 8 fastest sprinters have been caught:

Wish the CBC clip was better and longer to get some more comments (I have it somewhere on VHS), but magnificent call from Don Whittman.

9.79 and could've been faster if he didn't do this before the finish line, shoving it right in Lewis' face.

That 30 for 30 really tells it like it is, at least for the fact how greasy, arrogant and slimy Lewis, and his coach, are/were.

I don't disagree with you, it just seems like that era was particularly dirty in hindsight. Clearly sprinting has had it's issues since then....which is why part of me is waiting for Usain Bolt to inevitably fail a test. Not really fair to Bolt, as he has never failed one, but with the sports history it's hard not to be skeptical of anyone with success.

I do love the 100m though....it's one of the best parts of the Olympics. Donovan Baileys performance in Atlanta was just as exciting as Johnson in Seoul.

We should have a poll. Who thinks Bolt is clean?

Weren't most of the samples from those in that field tested many years later and all or almost all found to be drugged? I read that somewhere.
