So a lot of the regular posters in this thread are what I would consider men (and women) of distinction. And by that I mean I assume you've all seen "The Room". But have you ever listened to "The Room"? Because on NYE I did...
...and like "The Room", you come away wondering whether a human being or an alien made this. It is a very disorienting, somewhat disturbing, yet unbelievably hilarious, listen.
Start with the album cover, and you might get the sense you are gonna listen to some wholesome, mid-tempo pop album. Maybe even something with a country tinge to it. Lol yeah right, this thing is closer to Death Grips than it is Taylor Swift.
With her signing, well, no shock, she can't sing at all. Yet, while autotune is pervasive, it doesn't seem like she knows how to use it, or her producer knows how to blend it in the mix, adding to the confusing state of the album. Blending the horrible vocals with production choices that rarely match the tone of the songs or her lyrics, creates a constantly interesting listen.
When it comes to the lyrics, knowing Farrah's story certainly helps. She is clearly in a post-traumatic state while writing these lyrics. Still, even knowing that, these lyrics are so relentlessly immature, narcissistic and detached it creates a fascinating listening experience. Contrasted against these mostly harsh beats, it cultivates a sort of nightmare-ish feel to this listen.
Yet, even with the dark feel to this, it's been put in the hands of rank amateurs (the producer, for instance, has only one album credit to this name, this album). So instead of a dark and possibly even moving listen, it is mostly ####ing hilarious. The first 10 minutes in particular are breathtaking, literally, cause I was struggling to breathe I was laughing so hard. Slows a bit in the middle when she tries serious ballads, but closes strong enough (or weak? or hilarious? I don't know...).
Like "The Room", this is outsider art that wasn't meant to be outsider art, yet it works so spectacularly, albeit not even close to the way its creators intended. Yet, unlike "The Room", this album is actually kind of influential? Hyperpop and Electropop clearly take elements from this album. "Brat" and a lot of Charli XCX's output is clearly indebted to this album. Charli should have Farrah as a feature at some point.
Ultimately, this album, like "The Room", will leave you either bored, confused and wanting to turn it off, or you will be enthralled and laughing your ass off like you didn't believe was possible when you looked at the album cover.
Unratable/10
