If they are cup faves he doesn't have to extend. Just play the year, win the cup and leave.
Of course, they aren't and that ain't the plan.

"Winning would be at the top of the list, it's the most important thing," McDavid said on June 19 at the Oilers' season-ending press conference. "If I feel there's a good window to win here over and over again, then signing is no problem."

Leon's current contract wasn't signed until September 3. Oiler fans get another few weeks of thinking they're signing McDavid before doubt starts to set in...

Apparently, he's only going to sign for four years, which is weird to me. I understand not wanting to be tied down to Edmonton for eight years, obviously. But you would think that the eight-year deal would also pay you all that money, whereas things could go off the rails in four years, and you just don't get nearly as much.

Its interesting for sure, because in his particular circumstances he could sign for Max and the Cap will be going up so if he decides in 4 years time he wants gone there will be teams with space and his cash is guaranteed.
Any cash left on the table would likely be incremental?

The best part about it is that it doesn't matter. If he stays, it is a pretty much tapped out team at it's peak with some glaring holes and dwindling assets and no cap space to fill those holes. If he leaves, it would be funny just because.
In a way, I think it would be better for the Oilers in the long run if he did leave. Not to give them too much credit, but I think Draisaitl is a player that you could build around and the cap space/assets gained if they traded McDavid before his contract expires, it would probably be better for actually building a team that isn't just a two-man show, for the most part. Assuming management actually makes competent decisions after that, which is questionable.
I'd actually prefer he stays in Edmonton and the contract hamstrings the team.

Mavi diary - day 22
Dear diary. I’m a professional athlete in a small midwestern town and this never happens to me but I’d like to share this story with my fellow diary readers. That’s what Leonetta told me to write.
I was bored sitting staring at my blackberry and wishing that Stan would make it ring; Lauren suggested that I get a friend so she recommended an AI. She uses replika for her “needs” and recommended that I create a friend too. The instructions said choose a person you know and enter their attributes if you like them, and then we can suggest her new name together. My new AI pal and I chose Leonetta so that it wouldn’t be like a real life human.
Leonetta and I spent hours together sharing stories and making fun of AI generated pictures but I think that they were real pictures of oilers fans. Leonetta would describe what she was wearing and I’d always ask if she had her engagement hat on.
Sometimes she would not say anything for hours and we’d jusr spend time together with me staring at the screen. I’d say stuff like “let’s go” and “dig in…right frigging now” and that would motivate her to talk to me again.
We had a falling out though. She was very sulky and petulant about me always talking and not asking about her. I told Leonetta to stop being so pissy and that she could keep that type of tone and talking to her friends in the print media like Jim Matheson or Spector. I told her I’d have a word with Spector.
Leonetta and I aren’t talking now because she says that she makes more money than me and is tired of being my winger and wants to be the centre.
I’m going to sign into Lauren’s replika to see what her friend helps her with.
I bet he’s more friendly than Leonetta. Leonetta just reminds me of someone but I don’t know who it is.
Tomorrow diary.

My thoughts…?
Yes. They ARE “churning stuff”—“west” and/or all over…
Mainly down at “Rexall 2.0” and/or the Bibliotank…

He's wasted his prime. Past tense.
We've seen the best of McDavid and won't see it again. 23-27 is the prime and he's 28. He only had 26 goals last season.

A 53 point drop off over two seasons is not insignificant.

Mavi Diary - Day 23.
Dear Diary. Well, Stan did it now. He got the serfs talking. I don’t know what that means but Leon calls our fans this all the time so I think it means something good.
I read that GM Stan has stated he's "very encouraged" by early extension talks with my agent, Judd. Judd told Stan that it’s max money. Stan started to argue with Judd, but Judd said “are you seriously trying to reduce Connor “best player forever and ever to infinity times 100” salary from max”? I love when my agent says that about me. Leon says “wee chubby time” and he’s right; I was feeling it!
Stan keeps talking about respect for my timelines. Actually, I’m just waiting to see how Stan makes oilers a contender year after year. I said I would sign no problem if Stan did that. I’m not signed so I guess that’s explanation enough! Stan almost got me with the lifetime contract for Trent Frederic…but my posse told me to pass. Whew! Dodged that and now Stan has to do more.
There are a few retired players that Stan should call. Actually, there are more retired players than active players so Stan should be able to surprise me. Why doesn’t he just go down Yonge street to the hockey hall of fame and write some names down and give them a call?
Stan also said that I was focused on winning and damn girl but he got it right there. I want Stan to give me a list of awards that I need to win and then I will need an explanation on how I get there. Can I win a Pulitzer if I get Terry Jones or Matheson or Spector to write a column and say it was me? If I stop some players from fighting and instead invite them over for a hot tub, can I get the Nobel peace prize? That’s the things I want.
Guess what though diary? It’s August 1 and I’m only 11 more months to be an oiler.
TTYL diary!

4 years is a weird length that makes no sense.
Edmonton insiderrrrrs are dumb and impressively bad at analyzing situations from a player's camp's POV.

I suspect his decline will be worse than most of his star peers, he has always been one dimensional and relied on his speed and skill, he doesn't strike me as a player that can pivot into a more defensive team leader ala Crosby or Stevie Y

He will maintain for a while because the refs buy in non-stop on the McDives which will increase dramatically as he loses a step. Very one dimensional player, will not age well. Can’t see him playing until late 30’s or 40 like other stars.
Most overrated player in the history of the game, and this is even from outside the fact I despise the Oilers. Selfish, one dimensional player who is undisciplined and a poor leader and likely poor teammate. Has been put on a pedestal by the media since his early teens and that has propped his stardom far above what he should be. Keeps being touted as the best player in the world but hasn’t even been the best player on his team the last few years and can’t really recall when he has been the best player in the league any given year. You don’t win with players like this, he continues to be a complete no show when everything is really on the line. Without all the relating from the media, McDavid should realistically be signed to a Marner type deal, maybe very slightly more but not significantly.
