Gillies needs at least another half season in the AHL. Guys his age need to be playing 40-50 games a season, not playing 15-20 and warming the bench the rest of the time. It's incredibly rare for a goalie with less than 70 games in the AHL to make the jump to NHL backup, and there's nothing to suggest Gillies is an exceptional prospect who's on a faster track than Quick, Murray, Talbot, or Gibson. The guy lost a full year of development, and next season is where he has to make it up.
Seriously, the worst franchise in the NHL at developing goalies shouldn't act as though it's smarter than everyone else and defy the normal path of goalie development, which is 75-150 games in the AHL.
