I haven't read all of the posts here, but skimming this thread is a real eye-opener. There are actually people who are 100% adamant that the Canucks are rebuilding and are actually way ahead of the Flames in the rebuild, and that the Flames are not rebuilding at all. WTF?
I feel like I have taken the wrong pill. Here I see one team trade assets for futures. I see another team trade a single asset for one future and 3 players that they can fit into their roster (albeit young). I am not convinced that the Canucks are rebuilding. Heck, although their best player in this trade by a wide margin in Hughes, I can actually see the Canucks working their way up the rankings with some players coming back from injury, and them getting a 2nd line center in this deal. Buium is going to be a FANTASTIC #1 defencmen down the road, but he is already contributing now.
I am absolutely shocked by how far Winnipeg has fallen in the standings with Hellebuyck out. They play completely different without him I guess. Maybe the same is also true for Vancouver. I think they finish out of the bottom 3 this season (unless they make more trades of course). I can see them still finishing outside of the bottom 5.
That's one heck of a return. The win has to go to the Wild for getting the best player (and one of the league's best players overall), but the Canucks could very well win this deal long-term. They did better than I thought they could given the circumstances. I am curious to see how they do in the next 10 games. Definitely curious if they start selling more players.
