The other part of it is, if the Oilers are in a situation 2, 2.5 years from now where their window has clearly closed, they could trade McDavid at that salary for a massive haul which could kickstart their rebuild. Particularly if Draisaitl is still decent at that time (which I think he will be, I see his career projection kind of similar to Kopitar).

Assuming that there is a NMC, why would McDavid agree to move to a team that was gutted to bring him in, and why would he re-sign with that team if they traded current players and futures? Why would a team do that without an extension in place?
If any trade happened as envisioned, it would be draft picks, and between the improved standings from McDavid’s new team and the oilers ineptitude in drafting and development, it is nowhere near likely that the Oilers remain as contenders.
I think it’s far more likely that McDavid walks at the end of the deal, or signs the 6 year extension at that time. Will he also give a discount at that time?
