The only reason there is expectation of a huge contract is because.... he is a top pair D.
That is compounded by the fact that he is a top pair RHS D, which is more rare than a LHS D, and there are very few top pair D available, even if they are not elite.
You are probably right. The Sharks will likely try and keep all of their centers and morph their team into some new age version of the leafs where they have a "big 4" forward group, 1 good D, and a goalie and hope that works. When it doesn't work and they are stuck in cap jail, one or more of those "big 4" will probably walk to free agency.
But, it will be interesting to watch if when they will try to force Smith or Misa onto the wing and they will refuse to sign their next contract and ask for a trade.
Same with the Ducks and Carlsson, McTavish, and McQueen. None of these guys worked their asses off to get drafted in the top 10 of their draft a highly coveted C to get shunted to the wing.
It is hard for a GM to have all of the leverage when their guy is demanding out and can start saying things like "I won't sign there".
