That's just not true. Hossa signed in Detroit at a discount over Edmonton expressly because he wanted a cup that year (Detroit was the team that beat the Pens). Then said he wanted to stay in Detroit long term but they couldn't afford him, even though he publicly said he was willing to take a discount.

Chasing cups was Hossa's deal at the time. It's why he signed with Pittsburgh and Detroit and it's why he signed with Chicago. All of whom were a year or so from a cup. None of them were a team a few years away from a cup - which is the discussion with Andersson and Anaheim.
In fact, Hossa and Winters had used some sort of formula - "they had used a mathematical model to determine the teams most likely to get at least 100 points in the 2009–10 regular season"
